Faculty spotlight: Cleaveland's study leave
Carol Cleaveland is an associate professor in the Department of Social Work and has been a scholar at Mason since 2007. Cleaveland began exploring Latino immigration in 2004 utilizing ethnographic research methods and working with Mexican day laborers in Freehold, NJ, to understand how the day laborers negotiated police harassment and anti-immigrant ordinances. Since 2013, Cleaveland’s work has focused on Latinas from Central America and immigration-related trauma, including experiences in human smuggling. She was awarded study leave during the spring 2023 semester to complete her work on two projects. Read more about Cleaveland’s study leave accomplishments.

      Dissertation grants
Congratulations to two more PhD students who applied for federal dissertation grants. I’m delighted to share that Kelly Baker (HAP) and Grace Nyambura (GCH) have applied for federal dissertation grants. As you know this is a big lift for first-timers and I want to congratulate them and their supervisors, Yiota Kitsantas and Michelle Williams, on their submissions. Based on feedback from faculty supervisors we’ve made a couple of adjustments to ensure a solid submission experience, and less angst for all involved, me included! It really is a great skill for many of our doctoral students to demonstrate, so, once again, KUDOS and we wish you best of luck.
