PhD Alumnus to serve as Steinhardt new Dean of Students

Higher Education PhD alumnus Dr. Daniel Choi (‘11) will join NYU as Associate Dean for the Steinhardt Office of Student Affairs in March. Daniel believes that higher education can be heavily influenced by connections between colleagues, peers, mentors, and friends. As Associate Dean, Daniel plans to support students and staff by connecting their goals to various opportunities and resources. He notes that it is important for staff and students to have institutional support, especially around areas like work-life integration, responsibilities, and mental health. Daniel hopes to hear from the NYU community and find ways to address obstacles they face in a thoughtful and sustainable way. Higher education is an ever-changing landscape, and Daniel encourages master’s, EdD, and PhD students to remain open-minded about areas of research and career opportunities as they continue to develop. He is excited to meet with students in-person, share advice on career development, and further community engagement and connections for all.

Study Abroad Returns!

Higher education and student affairs alumni report study abroad programs as the highlight of their time in Steinhardt. Applications for trips to Brazil and South Africa during Summer 2022 are still open. Financial aid may be available.

Professor Erich Dietrich (erich.dietrich@nyu.edu) will lead the trip to Brazil. Professor Teboho Moja (teboho.moja@nyu.edu) will lead the trip to South Africa. South Africa - Understanding the educational and social reforms the country has gone through in the past 30 years has shed a light into the history of South Africa and its people, while simultaneously leaving me to ponder about what is to come in the next 30 years.

Beth Markowitz, EdD in Higher Education Administration (2020)

Brazil - One of the most impactful experiences was speaking with the students at the Steve Biko Institute, which instills self-esteem by helping students form a black identity and learn about their Afro-Brazilian roots. I will never forget this trip, the people of Brazil, the professors, or the students!

Jermaine Graham, MA in Higher Education and Student Affairs (2020)

India - It was great learning about the variety of higher education institutions across India through first-person accounts from students, administrators, and policy researchers, all of whom were eager to talk with us and share their perspectives. Having an opportunity to experience the vastness of Indian culture through higher ed and our tours of Mumbai, Kerala, and New Delhi was invaluable.

Introducing 2022 Association of Student Affairs Professionals Executive Board

The new executive board for the Association of Student Affairs Professional (ASAP) were elected in November 2021. Shauna Winters was elected Executive Chair, Jenna Schmidt and Lauren West were elected Recruitment and Orientation Co-Chairs, Keila Medina was elected Program Development Chair, Stephanie Bautista was elected Academic and Advocacy Chair, and Anna DiFede was elected Logistics Coordinator. Together the executive board hopes to create new opportunities for the Higher Education program, build community, and expand professional connections and skills.

Join us for "Considerations for Racial Equity and Carcerality Research and Practice" with Dr. Annie Le on Friday, March 25 at 12pm.

Dr. Le's presentation will discuss implications for research and practice on racial equity and carcerality in a schooling context.

Dr. Le holds a PhD in Social Sciences and Comparative Education with a specialization in race and ethnic studies from UCLA. She graduated from NYU Steinhardt with her MA in Higher Education and Student Affairs in 2015. Dr. Le is currently a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Walkout! Lab for Youth Justice at Stanford University.
