UPDATE ON PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES - October 18-19

Effective communication between school and home is a priority for Brebeuf Jesuit.  An evening dedicated to Parent-Teacher Conferences is just one way to work together. The response to the new online scheduling system has been strong (vigorous, robust, amazingly busy).
Parents may find that some teacher’s schedules are full for this event. If you find a schedule is full and still wish to talk with your student’s teacher, please feel free to email or phone them directly. If you find your schedule has changed for the October 18 or October 19, or you have spoken to the teacher prior to conferences, feel free to cancel the appointment in the PickATime scheduler to allow another family the time with that teacher.

Student Spotlight

DaCoda Love '17
Loves About Brebeuf
I love the importance that is placed on effective and meaningful community service; it becomes more than something to you have to do, and turns into something that is a part of you.
Favorite Class
So far, my favorite class has been Spanish III with Sra. Brown. She made learning Spanish a little less painful (sometimes) and I once got to hear Mr. Brown sing during class, and that may have been the highlight of the year. (Sorry, Sra.)
Future Plans
Right now, the plan is to major in Sociology and minor in African-American studies.  I hope to use that combination to study the development of African-American culture.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
VP of Black Student Union
Co-President of S.W.A.T. (Students Working Against Trafficking)
Random Fact
My father named me after his favorite John Wayne film!
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
I would say that Brebeuf is as academically rigorous as they say. I especially got that feeling during my junior year when classes were a little heavier than in recent years. Doing well required dedication and thorough work, and we are lucky enough to have teachers who are ready and willing to equip us with everything we need to succeed in their class. So while the courses are rigorous, we aren't left to figure it out alone.
What do you think of…
Apple getting rid of the headphone jack on the iPhone?
I think it’s ridiculous. They have these tiny little ear buds and people are going to lose them.

Adjustment to Gaining the Alternative PE Credit

Brebeuf Jesuit has made an adjustment to the current Alternative PE process, in hopes of streamlining the communication across all seasons.
Going forward, students must report to the Athletic Department at the conclusion of their season to inform the Athletic Department of their intention to receive the credit. The Athletic Department will check their records to see if the student has completed the requirements for that season. If the student has completed the requirements, the Athletic Department will forward that student’s name to have the credit placed on the student’s transcript.
There will no longer be a need to register prior to a certain deadline to receive the credit. Students who have already registered still must inform the Athletic Department about their intention to receive the credit once the season is over.
If you have any questions, please contact jweinstein@brebeuf.org.

Freshman Service Days for the Fall

Freshman Service Days are completely voluntary and do not count towards the Community Service credit at Brebeuf. They are offered each year to the incoming freshmen to help introduce them to the part of Brebeuf Jesuit's mission of being men and women for others, and it is our hope that it will start them on a path of service beginning before, and going far beyond, the hours that they are required to complete during their junior and senior years.  This is also a great opportunity for freshmen to get to know more of their classmates outside of the classroom.
Freshmen can participate in one or all of the Freshman Service Days as space allows.  Class absences will be excused as long as permission slips are turned in 1 week prior to the trip.
Sign up on our signupgenius.com page by clicking here
If you have any questions, please contact Nick Klingler at nklingler@brebeuf.org, or 317.524.7005.

#BrebeufDrives for 2016 Are Underway

Brebeuf Jesuit is renewing our community-wide effort, #BrebeufDrives, a quarterly program centered around uniting Brebeuf in giving and modeling service for the vulnerable and underserved populations of Indianapolis. These quarterly drives provide a great opportunity for our school community to actively be men and women for others.
#BrebeufDrives 2016 kicked off September 26 and continues through October 19.  The first collection will benefit the Dayspring Center for Homeless Families. The Dayspring Center indicated several needs that our drive can help fulfill: Soap/shower gel, shampoo, deodorant, and new washcloths/towels. These much-needed items can be dropped off in the collection boxes located in the Gym Lobby and Front Lobby.  Items may also be left in Nick Klingler's office located next to the chapel.
The focus of November's #BrebeufDrive will be to assist with the collection of items benefitting the Crisis Office for Brebeuf's annual tradition of Help for the Holidays. In the months to follow, further communications from Brebeuf will let families know the focus of the #BrebeufDrives on a quarterly basis.
Any interested parents wishing to assist with these drives in our school community may contact Nick Klingler in Community Service at nklingler@brebeuf.org or Debra Parker at debrabparker@gmail.com.

Congratulations to Brendan Murphy '17

A member of the Braves Crew team and rower at the Indianapolis Rowing Center, Brendan was selected for the 2016-2017 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll on Tuesday!
Brendan was one of 36 student-athletes chosen from 120 nominations nationally and the only rower selected from the state of Indiana for this top honor. This national recognition by USRowing, the national organizational body for the sport of rowing in the United States, is based on both academic excellence and success at a high level in the sport of rowing.
Pictured here: Brendan competed impressively in his semifinal heat of the Mens Open 2X event at the USRowing Club National Championships with Benjamin Kallmyer '16 in July.

Barcelona Exchange Trip 2017

This long-standing exchange program is an excellent opportunity for Brebeuf students to experience family life in a completely new culture! Students are immersed in the Spanish language, living with host families in Barcelona and attending school daily with their host student.  In addition to the host family experience, students will partake in many cultural excursions, among which is a full-day excursion to Manresa and Montserrat, two places with deep Jesuit roots. Students will also tour the world-renowned Gaudí masterpiece, the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, other Gaudí architectural wonders, and many other sites that are particular to Barcelona and Catalonian culture.
Two Brebeuf faculty or staff members will accompany the students and will be available to the students during their stay.  As a result of participating in the Barcelona Exchange Program, Brebeuf students gain confidence and proficiency in Spanish. They may even learn a bit of Catalán, the other official language of the region!  The experience is unforgettable and truly gives students a taste of the world beyond the doors of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.
