The Hebrew College Rabbinical School has developed a unique pedagogy of Jewish learning and practice over the years, woven together by the learning and teaching of our faculty. Each semester, faculty members speak and teach at synagogues, conferences, or institutions across Greater Boston, North America and beyond. They carry the compelling, relevant, and pluralistic love of Torah that animates our Beit Midrash to Jewish communities across the world, studying and building community around the most vital conversations of both our ancient tradition and our current moment. A Whole People of Whole People

This week’s parsha, Yitro, holds one of the most iconic moments in the Israelites’ journey, God’s revelation at Mount Sinai. According to a popularly referenced midrash, all Jews of all times were there. The word העם (“the people” or “the nation,”) appears frequently in this parsha, sometimes as כל-העם, (“the entire nation” or “all the people.”) What can we learn from the varied uses of “the nation” and “the whole nation?” Why is being whole, united, and inclusive important? Why do we find comfort, millenia later, in the idea that we were also there at Sinai?

TAMID FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Aliza Brosh, Hebrew Language Ulpan

As part of our new Tamid of Hebrew College faculty spotlight series, we recently spoke with Ulpan instructor Aliza Brosh about her teaching, adult students, and love of Hebrew language literature and poetry.

"I majored in Hebrew literature, and am passionate about the Hebrew language, its semantics and dynamics. Teaching advanced students makes it easy to 'play' not only with the level of the language, but also with its historical layers."

Winter Seminar with the Jewish Studio Project

As part of their Winter Seminar, Hebrew College rabbinical students spent January 29th in an immersive day of learning with the shared campus partner Jewish Studio Project, exploring the theme of creative spirituality and discovering how art-making can be a powerful form of prayer and a resonant leadership. Founded in San Francisco by Hebrew College Rabbinical School alumna Rabbi Adina Allen, Jewish Studio Project recently opened its first regional hub on our shared campus in Newton, MA, which made this collaborative day of creativity possible. LIVING LEGACY SOCIETY:

Remembering Cantor Harold Lew z"l

Last summer, the Hebrew College and metro Boston community mourned the passing of Living Legacy Society member Cantor Harold Lew (September 17, 1925 – July 10, 2024). Harold grew up near Hebrew College in Dorchester, MA, and met his wife Barbara “Honey” Lew z"l, in 1940 when they both enrolled at Hebrew Teachers College (Hebrew College’s original name). Harold became ordained as a cantor in 1975 at the Jewish Theological Seminary and served at Temple Israel in Sharon for 36 years.

We are deeply honored to be included in the Lews’ estate planning, which nourishes a legacy of vibrancy and relevance that helps to enrich and ensure our Jewish future.
