Future-Proofing Education
Community Colleges Invest in Next Generation Critical Workforce by Emphasizing Equality in Education and Career Training

Community colleges have forged new paths for students on their academic and professional journeys, providing flexibility, affordability, and access to education as core tenets of learning.
With career training experiencing a supply gap across the U.S. in recent years, community colleges have held an integral role in bringing renewed focus to critical career training programs by investing in dynamic facilities and resources that support the next generation of students and the future of the workforce.
BNIM's September mindful blog provides insight into the role of community colleges in future-proofing education, highlights community colleges' early beginnings and continued growth, and shares three case studies from BNIM's recent projects:
  • Johnson County Community College, Career and Technical Education Center
  • Metropolitan Community College, Blue River East Building
  • Southeast Community College, New Construction Technologies Center

The Blue River East Building establishes a new campus presence for Metropolitan Community College in Independence, MO, which is home to the Great Plains OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Education Center and MCC's CDL (Commercial Driver’s License), Forklift, Linework, and Logistics programs.
The Blue River East Campus serves 800+ students enrolled in these specialized programs, and aims to strengthen Kansas City’s future workforce, fulfill a high demand for technical skills, and create a positive impact in the local economy. Located on a 100-year flood plan, BNIM collaborated with MCC to analyze resiliency options for building cladding, electrical systems locations, and structural systems. The design team also reimagined the limitations of a pre-engineered metal building by maximizing materials and financial and sustainable stewardship.  M O R E

“Once I pass that threshold, my license will be precedent for those coming up after me. I will be in constant pursuit of greater representation in the field. […] It’s not about what the license can do for me, it’s about what my license will do for others.”
- Carleigh Pope
Carleigh Pope was among the 34 people recently selected to receive the Architects Foundation’s 2022 AIA Large Firm Roundtable (LFRT) ARE scholarship. The Architects Foundation is a program in partnership with the AIA that was created to support and empower the next-generation of architects. Between work, involvement in NOMA KC, and her ongoing studies, Carleigh combines and pursues her goals within each area. Carleigh is driven by the challenge of breaking down the systematic idea of what being an architect means. To her, licensure is just one part of the bigger picture.  M O R E
