Senator Bob Casey visits NeighborWorks office for funding announcement

It was our pleasure to welcome U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) to our office on Friday, January 20! Senator Casey (who serves as the Chair of the Senate Aging Committee) announced a $1 million federal appropriation in support of our Aging in Place work in Lackawanna, Wayne, and Luzerne counties. This funding support will allow us to greatly increase the number of older adults served with critical safety modifications across all three counties. The funding was secured by U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (who was unable to join us for the event) and Senator Casey through the Administration for Community Living.
We are most thankful for the continued support of Senator Casey, Congressman Cartwright and our many Aging in Place partners who invest in delivering this life-changing work for older adults in our community.

Seeking volunteers for Safety Kit Week

In collaboration with the University of Scranton's Occupational Therapy Department, we are seeking groups of 2-5 volunteers to assist with the installation of Home Matters Safety Kits in older adults' homes. Safety kits include items such as fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, light bulbs and more. The installation of safety kits will give older adult homeowners the ability to live safely and with dignity within their homes. A weeklong safety kit volunteer event will take place from February 20-24. Applications will be available here on the morning of January 31. All applications must be submitted to Alyssa Espinoza by February 13.

ECHO unit placed in Spring Brook

The first Elder Cottage Housing Opportunity (ECHO) unit has officially been placed in Spring Brook Township. This is the first of three units that will be placed in Lackawanna County, with an additional unit under construction for use in Wayne County.
Elder cottages are small, separate, manufactured residences that are temporarily placed in the side or rear yard of an older adult’s friend or family member. ECHO cottages provide safety and autonomy for older adults along with easy access to family members who can provide assistance. Please click here for more information.

Remembering Joe McDonnell

Joe McDonnell, one of our first Aging in Place clients when the program was launched in 2018, and neighborhood anchor in Scranton, tragically passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at the age of 96.
He was raised in Pittston, the son of the late Joseph and Martha McDonnell, and attended Pittston schools. He proudly served in the United States Army, rising to the rank of sergeant. During World War II, he was a member of the 101st Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron, Troop C, assigned to the Fifth Armored Tank Division. He fought heroically in the Battle of the Bulge and throughout the European theater, and was released in 1946 with four combat stars.
NeighborWorks assisted Joe and Joan by installing a downstairs bathroom in 2018 to help make their home more accessible to them.
