About the Piece
Photography is often at its best when it portrays a sense of space and light. The wonderful light I experienced on a recent morning in Tucson, Arizona spoke to me in a compelling voice:  make an unusual photograph in a minimalist way. I chose the sky, moon and saguaro cactus as my subjects and assistants in this endeavor. For me, this photograph conveys the beauty I experienced on a wonderful desert morning.
About Kevin Hass
I have been interested in photography since the age of 10. The concept of finding subjects for my camera and the wonder of how images are recorded have both fascinated me.

In junior high school, my work found some recognition. I was selected the winner of the Science Fair competition for my photomicrograph of a spider leg segment, made with my own toy microscope and box camera rig. A high school photography class was my first formal training, culminating years later with my graduation from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. Brooks was considered to be among a small number of the best photography schools in the world.

My work has been exhibited In the United States and France, including group shows and solo exhibitions that were well received. These showings led to a major exhibition of my work at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It was a solo show, held from February 2, 2019, to January 5, 2020. Much of the production and curation of the exhibition was my responsibility, including selection of the photographs, printing, matting, framing and arrangements for shipping.

Hello, Fellow Artists!

Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it.
                                             R. Motherwell

Can you believe that November is upon us? I, for one, cannot ... Where has this year gone? I hope that you have found time, energy, and the richness that creating brings this year. With the upcoming holidays, there can be a tendency to let art practice go, but my wish is that we will all find the self care to continue to create through the end of the year and into the next.

It was marvelous to attend the 96th Annual exhibit and see so many faces present and so much wonderful art! Thank you to Dr. Mika Cho, Larry Rodgers, and the entire exhibitions committee plus volunteers for creating such a wonderful exhibit. I was grateful to arrive a bit early and really see all the work. That said, it was also lovely to have so many present supporting all the hard and beautiful work. The exhibit will be up at Whites Gallery for a month if you still want to see the work in person (which I recommend; it’s always better isn’t it?). And if you aren’t already applying for exhibitions, please consider doing so as we are all richer for seeing more art.

Please also make sure that your profile on the website reflects you and your current work. These are still difficult days to gather in person, but we can at least be generous with online sharing.

And please, please consider donating to “Art Supplies for Kids.” I know how much creating art engages my problem-solving mind and soothes my soul and can only imagine how meaningful that is for kids in foster care.

Warmly,
Shaney Watters

2021 Holiday Campaign
Here’s the latest on the Art Supplies campaign.

The "Art Supplies for Kids” fundraising campaign is getting closer to the goal of being able to provide more than $800-worth of art supplies to the children under the care of Homes of Hope Foster Care/Adoption Agency in West Covina this holiday season. Last Saturday, October 16, $217 was raised at the opening reception for PSA’s 96th Annual Juried Exhibition. We want to thank each individual that gave a donation that afternoon.

Please consider particpating in this very important program to make a foster child’s holidays that much better. There are several ways to participate. You can donate via a check or by electronic means. You can donate unused or slightly used art supplies from the stash in your studio, or you can purchase new art supplies and deliver them at an upcoming PSA general meeting.

Please send your donation check to:
Pasadena Society of Artists
P. O. Box 90074
Pasadena, CA  91109

Please indicate on your check “Art Supplies for Kids" donation.

If you wish to use the electronic payment method, here is the link:

Looking toward 2022 there will be plenty of exhibition opportunities both online and gallery installations. The New Member Showcase featuring all of the new members from 2021 will be during the spring. The 97th Annual Juried Exhibition will be in May 2022 at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center Gallery in Burbank. An Artist's Choice Exhibition will be presented during the autumn at Whites Fine Art Gallery in Montrose. There will also be two or more additional opportunities to exhibit in 2022. Most of these exhibitions will include a full-color printed catalog.

It is important to remember that all of these exhibitions would not be possible if the membership, that's you, did not participate by submitting artwork to the exhibitions.  Your continued support is vital to PSA.  The entire Exhibition Committee thanks each volunteer and participating artist for helping to have a very successful year of exhibitions presented by the Pasadena Society of Artists.

Have a happy holiday season.
