LVCA Student Awarded National Student of the Year

We are very pleased to announce that LVCA student Bushiri Salumu has won the national Dollar General Student of the Year Award, which recognizes an outstanding adult learner.
In recognition of his commitment to education and his many achievements, Bushiri was selected from students nominated nationwide. He will travel to San Diego later this month to accept his award at this year's ProLiteracy Conference on Adult Education.
Bushiri is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo. After his parents were killed in a civil war, he left the Congo and lived in a refugee camp for four years before coming to the U.S. as a refugee in 2012. Since then, he has earned his GED, obtained U.S. citizenship, completed his CNA certification, and has recently accepted a CNA position at UVA Children's Hospital. He continues to work with his tutor David at LVCA.
Two of our staff have also been invited to present at the ProLiteracy Conference. Executive Director Ellen Moore Osborne will lead a workshop on volunteer tutor retention, while Program Manager Steven Reid will talk to adult educators about recognizing and addressing their implicit biases.
