Drug Discovery Think Tank Program |
The Indiana CTSI Preclinical Innovation “Thank Tank” program serves as a one-stop shop for PIs to receive guidance from a pool of advisors including experts in drug discovery and development with academic and industrial experience and members who can answer scientific, technical, clinical, business and regulatory questions. Learn more.
Andrew Dahlem, PhD, senior research professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine and Richard E. Taylor, PhD, professor of chemistry & biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame, co-lead the Drug Discovery Think Tank program. Dahlem retired from Eli Lilly and Company in December of 2017 after nearly 28 years of service. At the time of his retirement, Dr. Dahlem had been vice president and chief operating officer for Lilly Research Laboratories (LRL) and LRL Europe for more than 10 years. Professor Taylor, founding director of the Warren Center for Drug Discovery at Notre Dame, has overseen the Molecular Therapeutics Program within the Indiana CTSI for more than 10 years.

Letter of Intent deadline: February 1, 2023 Application submission deadline: March 30, 2023
|
For this funding announcement, the Indiana CTSI encourages applications from individuals with full-time, regular faculty appointments and postdoctoral research associates. Postdoctoral applicants must include their mentor on the investigator team as well as their letter of support in the submission package. This award is designed to support research and demonstrate innovations with a high potential to alleviate the health burden of one of the priority areas. Projects should result in high impact solutions that provide reciprocal benefit to the communities Indiana CTSI institutions serve either at home or abroad, as well as a plan to sustain and expand these efforts into either the partner country or US/Indiana after the end of support from this RFA.
Awards are up to $50,000 for a period of two years.
Submission of a letter of intent is required in order to receive approval for the submission of a full proposal. The letter of intent should address the following elements (see draft linked below):
|
- Scope and specific aims of the research project
- Project team including US and international partners and collaborators
- The reciprocal nature of the research project
|
Letter of Intent Deadline: February 27, 2023 Submission Deadline: March 27, 2023

A primary research-related activity of the Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases (CDMD)’s Pilot and Feasibility (P&F) program is to foster the development of new diabetes-related investigators and provide seed-support for innovative, high-risk projects. The CDMD P&F program has three different grant mechanisms:
|
-
Parent P&F Grants: This mechanism invites applications directed towards basic biomedical, clinical, and/or translational research questions on cellular and molecular metabolism related to diabetes/obesity/metabolic syndrome, clinical and outcomes research in diabetes and obesity, complications of diabetes and obesity, islet function and survival, and nutrition and physiology of diabetes and obesity.
-
Alzheimer’s-Focused P&F Grants: This mechanism invites applications focused on diabetes and metabolic disease aspects of Alzheimer’s disease and its related dementias (AD/ADRD)–frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, vascular cognitive impairment with dementia, and multiple etiology dementias.
-
Physician-Scientist P&F Grants: This mechanism invites applications from exceptional emerging physician-scientists holding an MD (or equivalent) or MD/PhD with a patient-oriented diabetes and/or obesity-related clinical research project, who are early in their clinical research careers and show great promise to develop into future independent investigators.
|
The program is directed at:
|
-
Category 1: New investigators without current or past NIH research support as a PD/PI with any current or past support from other sources being modest
- Category 2: Established investigators with no previous work in diabetes who wish to apply their expertise to a problem in diabetes research
-
Category 3: Established investigators in diabetes who propose testing innovative ideas that represent clear departure from ongoing research interests
- Category 4: Investigators developing new research techniques/technologies that could be used in an IDRC Core facility

Submission Deadline: March 29, 2023

The Indiana CTSI Pilot Funding program is intended to promote the use of technologies and expertise afforded by the Indiana CTSI Core Facilities available at all partner institutions. Successful proposals will demonstrate outstanding scientific merit that can be linked to generating extramural funding or novel intellectual property (IP). Success of the program will be viewed, in part, by the fostering of new funded grants or providing significant contributions to grant renewals. Therefore, proposals will be judged with equal measure on scientific merit and the likelihood of generating new IP or extramural grant support.
Funding is for a maximum requested amount of $10,000; projects are typically two years in duration and can be used for the utilization of Indiana CTSI-designated core facilities only. Information describing each core is available at https://indianactsi.org/servicecores.
A letter from each Core Director where service is required must be included in the application.

Submission Deadline: April 3, 2023
|
The goal of the Indiana University School of Public Health - Bloomington is to provide a more holistic model for the field of population health so that the individual, social, environmental and policy factors that support optimal health and wellness have a viable framework from which to approach the current human health conditions. Applications may focus on any aspect of population health but ultimately lead to the improvement of human health outcomes. These applications require a partnership between an IUB faculty member and a public health liaison and / or collaborator at another Indiana CTSI partner institution. PIs are strongly encouraged to include other Indiana CTSI affiliate faculty but this not a requirement. Collaborations need not be established prior to submission but should demonstrate the equal contribution of each team member and how synergism will be achieved.
Applications are expected to have a maximum requested amount of $50,000/year for two years for a total of $100,000.

Indiana CTSI Undergraduate Summer Internships |
The Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (Indiana CTSI) undergraduate translational research program provides students with the opportunity to work with Indiana CTSI faculty mentors located at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) on projects designed to increase their awareness of and interest in translational research to accelerate the pace of taking medicine from the "bench to the bedside." Students selected for the program will be matched with a CTS Imentor. This is a faculty-mentored research experience for the duration of ~ 8 weeks (specific dates for 2023 to be determined soon).
Students receive a $3,200 summer research stipend. Half of the student stipend is disbursed mid-project, and the remainder upon successful completion of the project and submission of all research products. Students are expected to engage in research at least 40 hours per week for the duration of the program which runs June to July.
Students accepted to the summer program should not enroll in classes, work part-time, or plan a vacation during the duration of the program. Students will be required to present a poster at the end of the summer program.

The Indiana CTSI includes Indiana University, Purdue University, and the University of Notre Dame as the major academic partners along with a number of other institutions and entities in the state.
It is funded by a Clinical and Translational Sciences Award from the National Institutes of Health amounting to some $33 million for the current five-year funding period of 2018-2023. This funding is supplemented by additional support from many other institutional and corporate partners.
Funding is provided to researchers by many mechanisms to promote translational and collaborative research among the partner institutions.
