Money in Your Pocket Program Helps Increase Income for Local Families

Money in Your Pocket (MIYP), a program that helps low- and moderate-income working families better utilize state and federal tax credit programs, returned $4.7 million to local families this year.

The average annual income for clients receiving tax preparation was $21,000 and the average return was $1,379. MIYP clients tell us they use the money for bills, car and home repairs, and to save for the future.

The program operated 15 sites throughout the Capital Region that were staffed by 230 volunteers who served as free tax preparers, quality reviewers and site coordinators. A total of 4,389 returns were electronically filed.

MIYP is a partnership of several community organizations, with United Way of the Capital Region serving as the lead agency. Financial support for the program was provided by PNC and U.S. Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service.

For more information on MIYP, contact LaTasha Frye at 717.724.4068 or visit our MIYP web page.
