It's also always a special time when the Blue Devils get to welcome military members from across the region to a game. Thanks to the generous donations of Duke Football fans, military and first responders are invited to receive complimentary tickets to sit in the "Heroes Corner" section. You may register for free tickets by clicking here.

DAFA Vets Talks - Military Family Life

Join the Duke Armed Forces Association (DAFA) on Tuesday, 9 November from 1800-1900 for a special event highlighting the unique challenges, issues, and sacrifices military families face, both during their time in uniform and while at Duke University. This event will feature veterans, current service members, and military spouses at Fuqua who will share what life is really like for today’s service members and veterans, husbands, wives, and children. The event will be located at Geneen Auditorium, Fuqua School of Business. You can register here

Discussion with US Representative David Price

Join the Duke Military Association--Duke's staff veteran organization--on 10 November at 1730 as they welcome US Representative David Price for a discussion about topics associated with Veterans healthcare and mental health services and support, postwar/post-conflict support for returning veterans, and other assorted topics from community-sourced questions. Duke Veterans Day Commemoration

Duke University will be observing its annual commemoration of Veterans Day with a ceremony beginning at 1100 on 11 November 2021 in Duke Chapel. A wreath-laying will occur at the Memorial Wall adjacent to Duke Chapel, in front of the Divinity School, immediately following the ceremony. Everyone is welcome to attend both observances!

Duke vs. Army Men's Basketball Game

SAVE THE DATE. In honor of Veterans Day, Duke Athletics welcomes you to join Duke Men’s Basketball in Historic Cameron Indoor Stadium as they take on Army West Point on Friday, 12 November at 1900. Duke Student Veterans will be sent a registration link next week to receive a ticket to the game.
As part of the Veterans Day celebration, a large court-sized flag will be displayed during the National Anthem. By registering for a ticket, Student Veterans are agreeing to volunteer as a participant to hold the flag on-court. Part of your responsibility as a volunteer will be to join athletics staff for a rehearsal in Cameron Indoor Stadium approximately 3 hours prior to tip. More details on rehearsal and the event will be emailed to registrants.
As a volunteer, you will receive one ticket to the game. Tickets will be located in Standing Room Only areas (Section 17 or 19 based upon availability). Capacity is limited. Registration is for Duke Student Veterans only. Please save the date and register through next week's Student Veterans newsletter.

Courses of Interest - Spring 2021

Care of Souls and the Ethics of War

Duke Divinity School will be offering a course dedicated to the Ethics of War and the function of pastoral care in the lives of individuals who have experienced combat.
War is a political and moral activity. While the experiences of going to war and returning home are often framed in psychological language, the phenomenon of “moral injury” makes clear that war must be considered in moral and political contexts if these experiences are to be understood. This course aims to bring together the moral and pastoral dimensions of going to war and coming home. We will engage participation in war, including moral injury, within the context of Christian traditions around war, moral, and political theological accounts of American war, and the moral agency of soldiers. We will also examine the pastoral and prophetic roles of military chaplains.

Public Policy and Veterans: A Social Policy Seminar—The Case of Returning Military Veterans

Housed in the Sanford School of Public Policy, this course will analyze a range of public policy responses and programs implemented to meet the needs of those who have served our country in light of how these initiatives have influenced programs that apply to the general population, as well as veterans. Students will have the opportunity to engage with subject matter experts on mental health and substance abuse issues, the problem of homelessness and housing, community and NGO support services, legal issues relating to veterans and veterans’ courts that are similar to civilian drug diversion courts, entrepreneurship, and employment programs.
This course is open to all graduate students this spring. Instructor Paul Dillon welcomes any questions or inquiries about this course.

Office Hours

The Office of Student Veterans will hold office hours each Monday from 10:00AM-2:00PM and Friday from 10:00AM-2:00PM in the Crowell Building on East Campus.
