Faculty/Staff SpotlightMS. CHRISTINA RHODES
How many years have you been at Brebeuf and in what capacities?
This is my second year working at Brebeuf. My first year I was the Department Chair for Academic Counseling and this year I am the Director. What surprised you most about your first year at Brebeuf? What surprised me the most was just how welcoming and friendly the whole Brebeuf community is from staff, students, and parents. I have never felt so invited into a work community as I did here at Brebeuf my first year and as I continue to be this year as well. What's your favorite thing about the role you play at Brebeuf?
My favorite role that I play is getting to individually know my students and their families. Previously, I worked at school where my caseload of students was over 400 and unfortunately I just did not have the time to get to know my students individually and see them more than once or twice a year. I love that here at Brebeuf my caseload is significantly lower and that I really get to know my students from freshman to senior year. I love that students take the time to stop by my office and just say hello and grab some candy, and teaching freshman seminar has been an awesome experience that I have truly grown to love. What makes Brebeuf different from other area high schools?
The students and staff! There is a sense of pride, community, and passion here at Brebeuf that I just have not always felt at other high schools that I have worked. It is an uplifting and encouraging atmosphere from the minute you enter the building and it just sends out positive vibes. If one of your friends was considering sending their child to Brebeuf, what would you tell them?
I do have friends who are considering sending their children to Brebeuf and I have absolutely encouraged them to learn more about Brebeuf as a great option for high school due to the outstanding academic preparation their student will receive for college. We have a rigorous curriculum that I believes sets up any student for future success after high school. In addition to academics, Brebeuf does such an outstanding job in allowing our students to be exposed to so many various opportunities from religion, athletics, clubs, diversity, and other opportunities that in a smaller school cannot be matched. What is something that challenges you, and how do you navigate that challenge?
One of my challenges is being a “bleeding heart” and sometimes being too sensitive. I think that both of those qualities can work both for and against me in many different aspects and due to that I’ve learned to use them to the best of my ability. As I’ve gotten older, I have worked harder to control what might perceived as the negative connotations of those qualities and to use them for my benefit so they are seen as a positive part of my personality! If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? I love the beach and traveling to the Caribbean. So far I have traveled to Aruba, St. Maarten, and the Bahamas, and my plan is to travel to as many Caribbean islands as possible. I’m not a fan of long flights, so I might just limit it to the Caribbean, though I do have a minor in Spanish so the thought of Spain is there as well. What do you like to do in your spare time when not working at Brebeuf?
If I’m not spending time with my two-year old, Madison, I’m probably buried in a book. One of my favorites is the Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. Tell us something about you that most people don’t know… -I am somewhat ambidextrous. My mom is a retired English teacher and she noticed at an early age that I favored my left hand so she made sure that I started writing with my left hand. However, my dad was convinced that I was going to play sports and he wanted me to be right handed so he taught me all the sports I played as a right-hander. So, to this day I write and eat using my left hand and then every sport that I play I use my right hand!

Disability Awareness Day
Freshman Disability Awareness Day is an annual event in which members of the freshman class get the opportunity to experience what life would be like with a disability. Each year, Occupational Therapy students from the University of Indianapolis come to Brebeuf to facilitate this event.
Held in the Auditorium, the event will feature several stations, each highlighting a disability or impairment commonly seen in Occupational Therapy. Freshmen will participate in an activity at each station that highlights adaptive and compensative methods for completing day-to-day activities while living with disabilities including paraplegia, amputation, blindness, arthritis, loss of sensation, perceptual motor deficits, and more.
Disability Awareness Day will take place next Friday, November 4, at 8:15 a.m. in the Auditorium.
