Fishing boats at their moorings in Dominica.
|
Our new summer travel issue takes readers on a ramble throughout the South and beyond, including the unspoiled Caribbean island of Dominica. There, visitors can hike through ferny rainforests, sip rum drinks, and snorkel through bubbling water at Champagne Beach. “I’ve never giggled underwater before, at least that I can recall,” writes G&G contributor Jonathan Miles. “But what other reaction befits trailing a hawksbill sea turtle through a carbonated sea?” Read more about Dominica and eight other great Southern escapes.

The Mississippi River winds through Memphis.

FLOAT ON: The Mississippi River has long been one of the most important waterways in North America. Indigenous tribes traded along its banks. European explorers used it to push westward. But arguably its heyday came during the paddleboat era, a time of “floating palaces…as beautiful as a wedding cake but without the complications,” as Mark Twain described them. Passengers can rediscover this bygone age with American Queen Voyages, whose fleet of seven boats includes the premier American Queen paddlewheel. Journeying through America’s heartland, you’ll revisit the country’s past while enjoying modern luxury on a vessel designed to look as it would have in the early 1800s. Who said time travel wasn’t possible? Learn more about American Queen Voyages.

Ireland. When a work trip called me to the fair Green Isle, my mom immediately offered her chaperone services—castle exploring, Guinness sipping, and sheepdog watching require parental supervision, didn’t you know? We flew directly from Orlando to Dublin (other Southern cities offering nonstop flights include Atlanta, Charlotte, and Dallas). Neither of us will forget seeing Ireland through one another’s eyes. If you’re thinking about a trip there, don’t miss:
|
-
Slumbering in ancient castles: Ashford Castle is the pinnacle place to stay for a dose of Irish history, glamour, and sporting pursuits, and we garden lovers delighted to find old camellias in bloom. We then followed Ireland’s Blue Book as our guide to old country houses like the 1716-built Castle Durrow, a charming family-run manor where we ducked beneath a corridor of fluffy cherry trees.
-
Animal encounters: The green and misty Cliffs of Moher seem extra special when puffins are roosting along the rocks. A guide loaned us a pair of binoculars and helped us spot the seabirds’ orange beaks. Later, at the Irish National Stud & Gardens, we learned about Ireland’s historic role in Thoroughbred racing and watched a new horse mama care for her two-day-old foal.
-
Musical interludes: After we both survived a fast and furious travelers’ stomach bug, we played this Robert Earl Keen song and laughed. But there is nothing quite like live Irish music, which emanates from pubs all over (we loved O’Donoghue’s in Dublin and Dolan’s in Limerick). Souvenir: the memory of Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan’s ethereal voice, especially in her song “Passenger.”
