We hope your semester is off to a great start. This monthly note is a light touchpoint highlighting teaching practices and reflections shared by colleagues and students, along with a few upcoming conversations worth knowing about.

Building on practices many of us began during the pandemic, some faculty continue to refine how pre-class materials can support deeper in-class engagement.

Small shifts like this, especially refinements that move time toward discussion and practice, can make a meaningful difference. If you’ve been refining or experimenting with your teaching this semester, we’d love to learn from you.

In a recent Wagner workshop, discussion forums came up repeatedly as faculty looked for simple ways to broaden participation and support peer learning. They were noted as a practical option, especially because they’re already built into Brightspace and can be used in a variety of ways.

A simple place to start: try one open-ended question before or after class, and give students a few days to respond and engage with one another. If you’d like help shaping a prompt or setting it up, feel free to reach out.
