Softball: Despite another casualty, Brentwood takes 'Battle of the Woods'

BRENTWOOD – Injuries squeezed the Brentwood High School softball team to just nine players at the end of the Ravenwood Invitational last week. While some have recovered, the team added a new one Tuesday when head coach Erica Powell bloodied her own nose while celebrating the Lady Bruins’ 7-2 road win over long-time rival Ravenwood.
“Anytime you beat Ravenwood, it’s good,” the veteran coach said smiling after her clip board got away from her, leading to a quickly resolved injury. “I mean, you could be playing checkers and we’d be out here fighting like dogs.”
“There is a rule at Brentwood … you can’t lose to Brentwood,” Powell added with a laugh

Moore to give State of the City address May 11

Franklin Mayor Ken Moore will give his annual State of the City address on May 11 at Rolling Hills Community Church in Franklin.
The mayor’s speech will begin promptly at 7:45 a.m. The theme this year is “Better Together.”
Moore will discuss how everyone working together has assisted the city of Franklin come back stronger after the COVID-19 pandemic. He will also talk about the city’s many accomplishments in 2021 and discuss projects on the horizon for 2022 with City Administrator Eric Stuckey.

Leadership Franklin announces scholarship recipient

Leadership Franklin has awarded a $1,500 college scholarship to Williamson County student Chandler Bell.
This scholarship is awarded annually to high school seniors or current college students who display their commitment to Williamson County through service and demonstrated community leadership. Applicants are selected based on grade point average, quality of essay and scholarship application points.

School board denies charter school application

The Williamson County Schools Board of Education on Monday denied Founders Classical Academy’s application to operate a K-12 charter school within the county.
A charter school review committee, which consisted of 14 members, including school board member Jay Galbreath, three assistant superintendents, community members, principals, central office staff and others, unanimously agreed that the application did not meet state standards and recommended the board's disapproval.

Registration open for Columbia State summer, fall semesters

Columbia State Community College’s summer semester begins May 23, and important deadlines are fast approaching for new and returning students.
New students and returning students who have missed one or more semesters must apply for summer admission by May 9. Summer and fall registration is currently open for all admitted students. Summer registration closes May 18. Students must apply for fall admission by Aug. 5. Fall registration closes Aug. 16.

Local nonprofits gear up for The Big Payback
Annual community foundation initiative set for May 4-5

Area nonprofits are preparing for The Big Payback, an annual initiative of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee where the local community has 24 hours to donate to Middle Tennessee organizations.
The ninth annual The Big Payback online giving event will start at 6 p.m. May 4 and last until 6 p.m. the following day.

Main Street Festival schedule, map released

The Heritage Foundation of Williamson County has released complete plans for this weekend’s much-anticipated 38th annual Main Street Festival, presented by First Horizon Bank, in downtown Franklin.
One of the area’s largest family-friendly arts and crafts street festivals, the free-to-the-public event that attracts hundreds of thousands of people to the Franklin historic district annually will be held April 23 and 24 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.

Early voting under way for county primary

Early voting for the May 3 Williamson County primary election kicked off last week and lasts through April 28.
Voters are tasked with choosing Republican and Democratic candidates for circuit court judge (21st District Divisions I, II, III and IV), general sessions judge, juvenile court judge, district attorney general (21st Judicial District), county mayor, county commission, county trustee, sheriff, circuit court clerk, juvenile court clerk, county clerk, register of deeds and school board for Williamson County Schools (Districts 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12) and Franklin Special School District (three seats).

Former police officer, country star Carson to be honored with concert

Jeff Carson, the country music hitmaker and Franklin police officer who died March 26 after an apparent heart attack, will be honored with a concert May 10 at the Nashville Palace.
A Music Memorial for Jeff Carson will include musical acts Michael Ray, Lee Greenwood, Mark Wills, Ty Herndon, Wade Hayes, Rhett Akins, Ricochet, Craig Campbell and more. The concert will begin at 7 p.m., and tickets can be purchased for $50 for reserved seating and $40 for general admission at www.outhousetickets.com.

Alzheimer’s Tennessee opens Franklin office

Alzheimer’s Tennessee opened its new office in Franklin with a ribbon cutting on Monday.
The nonprofit serves the local community with resources needed related to Alzheimer’s disease, research, related dementias, prevention and treatment efforts. Its vision is to “make Alzheimer’s a memory.”

Public comment sought on state broadband map

William “Billy Ray” Floyd, 69, of Franklin, passed away April 12, 2022.
He was born in Franklin to the late Charles and Betty Floyd. Billy Ray was the former vice president of Williamson County Fence & Guardrail. He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
