During the fall referral process, what if I have talked with a specific student about the job, or have someone I'd like to request to fill my open position?
If the student has a federal or state work study (F/SWS) award, please send them to CES, or invite them to email CES@pugetsound.edu, so that we can help them understand the process for obtaining a referral to interview for an open job on-campus.
- Continuing F/SWS students have an opportunity each April to pursue different on-campus employment for the next year. That is when we can refer a continuing student who is interested in your open job to interview.
-
Incoming students who are awarded F/SWS are invited to complete a work-study employment application over the summer before they arrive at Puget Sound. They may provide general and/or very specific information about their interests and preferences, which helps us refer them to interview for jobs that match those interests.
Please consider, with an open mind, any student referred to interview with you. To support an equitable hiring process for each vacancy, the referral process considers every student who has applied, and then refers one top candidate as a first interview for each open job. If you decide that a student who has been referred to interview is not a fit for the position after you meet with them (or, of course, if they don't take action to arrange to interview), then you can let the student know that you are not going to hire them. At that point, please reach out to CES so that we can discuss next steps for identifying a qualified student.
We cannot hold jobs open for students who are not participating in the F/SWS referral process or who have not applied. Preference in hiring is given to students who have been awarded F/SWS.
If a student does not have a F/SWS award and expresses interested in a role with your department that is typically filled by the F/SWS referral process, you can encourage them to watch Handshake (accessible through their Puget Sound login page or via CES) for any jobs that are opened up to all students, and apply for anything of interest there.
For F/SWS referrals, how does CES identify a student who fits the job qualifications? How can I communicate to CES what my specific hiring needs are? We base our referral of a student to interview off of the job description we have on record for your roles. If there is an update or clarification that you would like to make, please send CES an updated job description for us to review! To ensure changes are incorporated into fall referral decisions, job description updates need to be communicated to CES at least 2 months prior to the fall hiring season. Jess Flynn is always happy to consult about what you are looking for in a candidate and how to effectively communicate that in the job description.
Can students work remotely? No, student staff are temporary, hourly employees and thus are not eligible for telework. Students must work in person from a designated work location on campus, which may not be a residence.
Students may travel and perform work off campus when the responsibilities of the job require it (i.e. working an off-campus athletics event or a prospective-student event).
