Faculty Featured in Library Latine Heritage Month Display.
UROP mentors of Latinidad and College of Education faculty members Erin Castro, José Gutiérrez, and Verónica E. Valdez were featured in the Office of Undergraduate Research’s display for Latine Heritage Month.
The display, located on the first floor of the Marriott Library through October 15, celebrated active UROP mentors of Latinidad and students whose research projects explore themes connected to Latinidad.

Christy Austin is serving as the Campus Wellbeing Implementation Lead (CWIL) for the College of Education. In this role, she represents the college in the University of Utah’s Wellbeing & Resilience Initiative, supporting efforts to foster a healthier, more resilient campus community.
Amy Edwards and Carolina Corrales are serving as college representatives to a working group on behavioral health workforce development, education, and training. This group consults on statewide workforce development efforts and provides recommendations for degrees, certificates, continuing education, and advanced training opportunities aligned with Utah’s behavioral health priorities.

|
Chenglu Li has secured three research grants totaling $550,000 to advance his innovative work in artificial intelligence and education.

$50,000 from AIMS EduData to explore the use of large language models for knowledge tracing in online professional development.
- $300,000 from NewSchools Venture Fund to design and develop AI-powered knowledge graphs and multimodal generative AI for K-12 math learning.
- $200,000 from Accelerate’s Call for Effective Technology to conduct a large-scale impact study on an AI tutoring system.

in Prison

Erin Castro, Paméla Cappas-Toro, Andy Eisen, and Kehaulani Folau (ECS alum) attended the Inaugural TREC Symposium: Public Systems and the Future of Higher Education in Prison in St. Paul, Minnesota. Dr. Castro delivered the plenary address, “Stumbling Toward a Philosophy of Higher Education in Prison.”
The symposium brought together educators, researchers, and advocates to explore how public systems can expand access to meaningful higher education opportunities for incarcerated learners and strengthen pathways for justice-impacted students nationwide.

Sharlene Kiuhara has been selected to serve as a Faculty Fellow in the Office for Faculty for the 2025–26 academic year. In this role, she will help lead a mentoring workshop and contribute to research, planning, and content development to expand the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) program on the main campus.

| Dean Laanan Receives 2025 Founders’ Service Award

Congratulations to Dean Frankie Santos Laanan, recipient of the 2025 Founders’ Service Award from the Council on Ethnic Participation (CEP), a council of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). Dean Laanan has been a committed leader within CEP for more than two decades and will be recognized at the organization’s annual conference in November 2025.

Dean Laanan recently served as a panelist at the inaugural Dignity Leadership Summit on October 20. He joined Natalie Gochnour and Jesse Graham on the panel “University of Utah: Leading the Way in Bringing Dignity into Higher Education.”
The summit, inspired by Tim Shriver’s Dignity Index, focused on advancing dignity-based leadership and dialogue.
