We continue our “We Give Thanks for Parkway Hills” campaign. Sunday, Lisa McLain shared about the space she and Mark found at Parkway Hills as they went through their own time of seeking as well as a reminder that it is our gifts that allow us to be in mission and ministry in our community. Take a look at some of what she shared below. You can watch her full message here.
Mark and I are marking our own personal 30 year anniversary this month of being “all in” with Parkway Hills. I’d like to provide some context and history of our PHUMC journey by reading some from a reflection piece I wrote from the church newsletter 20 years ago during the church’s 10th anniversary celebration.
As the “New Church Madison” was being planned, started, and nurtured, we were experiencing a deep spiritual and personal crisis due to circumstances and events in our lives. During the mid-90’s we weren’t sure what we thought or felt about God, much less church. We had many questions that we found disturbing, yet inescapable, and we feared those questions would be viewed as unacceptable in church.
We followed with interest the beginning of the new church coming to town and officially joined in January of 1996. We felt we had found a warm, accepting place where our questions wouldn’t always be shared by others, but the questions wouldn’t automatically be condemned by them either.
I am immensely grateful to those who came before Mark and me. While we were floundering, struggling and feeling so alone, they were planning and working, preparing a place not where we’ve “figured God out,” but where we continue to seek our unfathomable God with a loving, caring, and--I trust--accepting community. I am thankful beyond expression that Parkway Hills was there for me when I needed to find my way back toward “home.”
In the 20 years since writing these words, PHUMC has continued to be that kind of place for me, a cherished community and space filled with fellow seekers, a place where I’m challenged but also feel comfortable to truly be me. I’m grateful for the people, the relationships, the inspiring witness, the community outreach, the questions, the memories and experiences of raising a child in this special community, the music, celebrations, memorial services, and meaningful worship services.
Carrying out our various ministries absolutely requires financial resources. There’s just no way around it. It takes money to pay the staff, keep the lights on, make needed repairs to aging buildings, and to carry out all areas of ministry. So, in this season of thinking about things for which we’re grateful and the concept of stewardship, I encourage you to think about our church and consider what it means to you and to think about how you can help support it through your prayers, your presence, your gifts (both personal and financial), your witness, and your service.
And thank you from the bottom of my heart for being our community.
--Lisa McLain

Thank you to the Parkway Hills family for all the support we've received after Matt's death.
We are thankful that he is done with chemo, radiation, and pain. But we are sad that we are here without him.
All the calls, text messages, emails and cards have been wonderful simply to know that we are not alone with our sadness.
We are so blessed.

Sounds like bees in our basement! But it's the Beds for Kids' Ministry hard at work. Ask Bill or Cindy how you can be part of the fun!

Join your church family in preparing our hearts for Christmas this Advent by participating in a 3 week study using Walter Brueggemann's book, Names for the Messiah. In Isaiah 9:6, a divine utterance is given to us using four royal titles - Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. We will reflect on each title and how the people understood it then, how Jesus did or did not fulfill the title, and how Christians interpret Jesus as representative of that title. We will meet in the Open Doors room, Room 201 upstairs Ed Building, Thursday, December 4, 11, and 18 at 10:00 am.
