If you use YouTube to share videos that you have created (such as lecture videos), you may consider using Panopto or Warpwire instead. These programs allow you to record, upload and embed your own videos – ensuring an ad-free viewing experience for your students.
For a copyright safe option for content from movies or TV, Duke Libraries offers Course Reserves, including streaming video which you can request and easily add to Canvas. Here are instructions for how to use Course Reserves with Canvas.
If you have any embedded YouTube videos in your course, you may consider adding the following disclaimer on your course’s homepage:
“Some videos used in this course may display advertisements. These ads are not affiliated with or endorsed by Duke University.”
This helps to clarify with students that any ads shown are outside of your or Duke’s control.
If you have any questions about this change, you may contact Canvas support 24/7, email us at canvas@duke.edu, or schedule an appointment with our Canvas analyst.
