student health and wellness presentations during parent-teacher conferences

All parents are invited to join Principal Greg VanSlambrook, Assistant Principal Stephanie Medcalfe, Director of Academic Counseling Christina Rhodes, and School Social Worker Libby Pollak for information and discussion about student health and wellness at Brebeuf Jesuit.
In the spring of 2017, all Brebeuf students took our school-wide health & wellness survey. It was our second year administering this survey, which is part of Brebeuf Jesuit’s partnership with Dr. Suniya Luthar, from Arizona State University, who is a leading expert in the field of youth mental health. As we did a year ago, we’d like to give parents an opportunity to hear about the survey results, what Brebeuf is doing in this area, and discuss how we can best support our students as partners in school and at home.
We are offering three identical sessions during the Parent-Teacher Conference days. We invite you to attend any one of them, when your appointment schedule with your child’s teachers allows. We will have a 15-minute presentation followed by 30 minutes for discussion. The session options are as follows, all held in the Chapel, and no RSVP or registration required.
  • Tuesday, October 10, 3:00-3:45 p.m.
  • Tuesday, October 10, 7:15-8:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 11, 1:00-1:45 p.m.
Any questions, please contact Greg VanSlambrook at gvanslambrook@brebeuf.org. Thank you!

Picture of the Week

On Friday, September 29, Brebeuf seniors attended the Scholarship Opportunity Network, sponsored by the Indianapolis Black Alumni Council, at Crispus Attucks High School. Students had an opportunity to meet with college representatives and discuss college majors and admissions requirements. There were nearly 50 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in attendance. Each student was awarded admission to at least one university and the possibility of scholarship offers. Senior Stephen Walker was actually offered a scholarship to Alcorn State University during the event. Micah Jackson shared that "it was inspiring to see so many other focused black students and to hear of the legacy of these great educational institutions." Please join us in congratulating these students.

Student Spotlight

Loves About Brebeuf
I hate to echo everyone else, but my favorite part of Brebeuf is the people inside it. Most Brebeuf students are deep thinkers that care about the world around them, and that creates a classroom environment filled with intelligent questions and thought-provoking discussions. Some of my life’s most meaningful moments have happened in the presence of teachers and classmates here, whether on retreat or in class, and most high schools cannot say that.
Favorite Class
All English and Theatre classes! Sophomore year, I had English 10 Honors with Ms. Parson during 6s, and it was easily the best part of my day. This year, Advanced Theatre with Mr. Strader is super interesting and never fails to put a smile on my face.
Future Plans
While woefully undecided about the future, my present plan is to study International Relations, Environmental Law, and possibly Arabic, with the hope of one day using combined knowledge of those fields in foreign diplomacy or investigative journalism. Whatever happens, I’ll be content as long as I am able to travel, write, and promote social justice.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Fall Play & Spring Musical
President of Conservation Club
Co-President of S.A.G.E
Model U.N.
Ignatian Scholars
National Honor Society
IMA Teen Arts Council
St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Council
Random Facts
I can do the wave with my eyebrows, sometimes I read the dictionary, and I am currently in the process of memorizing the capitals of all countries.
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
I’ve recently become a fan of Mozart in the Jungle, but my all-time favorite shows include Sherlock, Gilmore Girls, and How I Met Your Mother
Can you tell us a little bit about your role in this year's Fall Play, The Laramie Project?
The Laramie Project is a sort of documentary-play, so each cast member is portraying a few different characters. My roles are Zackie Salmon, a lesbian resident of Laramie; Amanda Gronich, an actor in the Tectonic Theater Project; and Dr. Cantway, the E.R. doctor that initially treats Matthew Shepard. It’s been a privilege to be a part of a project like this, and I cannot wait for everyone to come see it!
Do you have big plans for Fall Break?
With any luck, I’ll be catching up on sleep from weeks of long rehearsals, but a few last-minute college visits are not out of the question.
What advice would you offer our Braves in the Class of 2021?
Be yourself! Or at least do things that help you figure out who you are. Brebeuf is a well-tended garden that is small enough to provide you with the resources you need to grow and big enough to give you space to blossom. Talk to everyone, study everything, avoid procrastination at all costs, and remember that four years will go by awfully quickly.
College Rep Visits
See below for a list of schools visiting Brebeuf next week. Note that students must register to attend in Naviance.
October 6 - Northwestern University and Bellarmine University
October 12 - Hamilton College and Lake Forest College
Students must register to attend these visits. The list of colleges visiting and registration can be found in Naviance under the “Colleges” tab. If you have questions please contact Kelly Shank at kshank@brebeuf.org.

Host families do not need to be able to speak French to host!

Any technical concerns can be directed to Amy Pitcher at apitcher@brebeuf.org, or Jen Wagle at jwagle@brebeuf.org.

Barcelona Exchange Trip - April 2-16, 2018

This long-standing exchange program is an excellent opportunity for Brebeuf students to experience family life in a completely new culture! Students are immersed in the Spanish language, living with host families in Barcelona and attending school daily with their host student.
In addition to the host family experience, students will partake in many cultural excursions, among which is a full-day excursion to Manresa and Montserrat, two places with deep Jesuit roots.  Students will also tour the world-renowned Gaudí masterpiece, the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, other Gaudí architectural wonders, and many other sites that are particular to Barcelona and Catalonian culture.
Two Brebeuf faculty or staff members will accompany the students and will be available to the students during their stay.  As a result of participating in the Barcelona Exchange Program, Brebeuf students gain confidence and proficiency in Spanish, and they deepen their understanding of other cultural practices and perspectives. They may even learn a bit of Catalán, the other official language of the region!  The experience is unforgettable and truly gives students a taste of the world beyond the doors of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.
Applications for the Barcelona Exchange 2018 program need to be completed and returned to Sra. Beck in the World Languages Department by Monday, October 23, 2017.
Students selected for the exchange program will be notified by Sunday, November 5, 2017.

IU Honors Program in Foreign Languages

Students who are interested in applying for the IU summer language program must register between now and November 15 on the IUHPFL website found here.
There will be an information session held here at Brebeuf on October 9 and 6:30 p.m. in the Efroymson Auditorium.
Since 1962, Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages (IUHPFL) has been providing to Indiana high school language learners the opportunity to experience language and cultural immersion through summer study-abroad programs. IUHPFL students attend 5- or 6-week programs every June and July in eight countries - Austria, Canada, Chile, China, France, Japan, Mexico, and Spain - learning Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.
IUHPFL’s combination of intensive academic instruction, a mandatory Language Commitment to speak only in the target language while abroad, and full-time integration into a host family, allows for students to participate in a total immersion experience.
Prospective applicants must be in level 3 or higher of the language to which they are applying at the time of application to IUHPFL. For Chinese students, they must be in level 2 or higher at the time of application. Sophomores may apply to IUHPFL, but it is important to note that high school juniors and seniors are given priority for selection.
