As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, new research highlights that more women than ever are choosing healthier beverages, with Rooibos firmly in the spotlight.
Tea continues to be a daily ritual for over 22 million South Africans, and data from Eighty20 shows women are driving this trend. They are more likely than other groups to opt for tea, including Rooibos, as part of their everyday wellness choices.
According to Prof Elmarie Terblanche from the Department of Exercise, Sport and Lifestyle Medicine at Stellenbosch University, Rooibos is “more than just a traditional herbal tisane – it’s a wellness companion for women at every stage of life.” Naturally caffeine-free, it supports evolving health priorities, from the student years through to family life and beyond.
Scientific evidence backs these benefits. A 2023 review published in the Journal of Public Health in Africa confirmed that Rooibos interventions significantly improved cholesterol levels, antioxidant status and blood glucose control across a wide age range, even in high-risk groups. Local researchers continue to build on these findings, strengthening Rooibos’ reputation as a natural tool for better health.
