Hello valued patrons!

While we are unable to present concerts right now, many things are happening at the RSO to help us prepare for the future. One that has been of interest to many of you is the search for our next Music Director.  While Steve Larsen has another full season with us, much of our planning must be done far in advance, and we have made significant progress in the search for his replacement. 

Here’s what has already happened:  In October we officially announced the start of our search for a new Music Director. We accepted applications through November and were thrilled to receive more than 200! In the following month, the search committee reviewed every cover letter and resume and collectively selected 60 conductors to move to the next level. What followed was a review of conducting and public speaking videos submitted by each of the 60 and from there 12 semi-finalists were selected. As often happens in a job search, two candidates removed themselves from consideration. On Sunday, March 29, the committee interviewed 10 amazing conductors. Technology allowed each of us to log into Zoom from the comfort of our homes to speak with candidates throughout the US and Canada. We could all see each other and talk as a group—with an occasional cat or dog making an appearance. 

Over the coming weeks, the committee will select six finalists, whom we will announce publicly this June. Those six individuals will join the RSO for the 2021/22 season as featured guest conductors.  During that season, our musicians and you—our valued patrons—will have the opportunity to enjoy a concert programmed and conducted by each finalist. Many of you may be able to meet and interact with our finalists, and all concert attendees will be invited to provide feedback. 

The Rockford Symphony Orchestra is here to provide vibrant music experiences for our community, and the board and staff firmly believe that all of you must be part of the process of selecting our new Music Director. 

Steve Larsen has thoughtfully crafted his final season. We are grateful that with the cancellation of much of the remainder of this season that we have the gift of one more season with Steve.
