Run for the Roses a great success!
A huge thank you to The Country Club of Scranton, Blu Elefante Events, Hooten Young, our many sponsors, all of our attendees, and our board & staff for coming together to host an excellent Run for the Roses, Kentucky Derby event on May 6! We saw over 260 attendees, with plenty of colorful hats, fun derby attire, and more to go around! It was a great, fun-filled night! So, thank you!

Event proceeds will benefit our older neighbors across northeastern PA. Thank you for allowing us to continue our mission in serving our neighbors and older adults in the area. We are especially thankful for Ms. Paulette Casciano, Mr. Casper Colo, and Ms. Vikki VanVolkenburg for joining us as our honored guests for the evening. Each has been an Aging In Place client of ours and had received various safety modifications to their homes.

First Paint the Town of 2023!
Our Paint the Town volunteer service event was a great success this month, with a week of hands-on on activities helping seniors in the Greater Lackawanna area. Presented by UGL, Paint the Town provides volunteers the opportunity to assist older adults in northeastern Pennsylvania to continue residing in their homes and communities safely and with dignity.

Seven older adult headed households throughout Lackawanna County were provided small home repair services, exterior painting, and yard maintenance from over 30 volunteers representing six organizations. Approximately 96 hours of service went into making the event a success, with over $3,000 worth of volunteer labor performed.

We want to especially thank volunteers from UGL and AZEK, who were both present at sites each day of Paint the Town. Also providing volunteers to complete the repairs for older adults were Erie Materials, GEO ReentryPS Bank and Wells Fargo.

Stay tuned for the details of our next community service event!

NeighborWorks hosts several homebuyer workshops
Our HomeOwnership Center recently hosted two homebuyer workshops this past month! We had a workshop in Monroe County together with Pocono Mountains United Way at the Pocono Mountains Association of Realtors office, as well as a Lackawanna County workshop at our office. We are so grateful to our amazing partners for helping make these workshops a reality! Make sure to check out our events page for future workshops.

New details on Scranton City Pride and Garbage Olympics
Please stay tuned for Scranton City Pride 2023, as we partner with Scranton Tomorrow and United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania to launch a citywide cleanup and beautification initiative. Taking place from June 2-10, Scranton City Pride will feature trash and litter cleanups, planting efforts, and other neighborhood beautification efforts. Participants can organize their family, neighbors, and coworkers to do a group project, or join up with a pre-planned service site. Go to the City Pride website here for more details on how to participate!
You are also invited to participate in the inaugural Garbage Olympics! Taking place as part of Scranton City Pride's week-long event, the Garbage Olympics is a project of NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania and United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Participation locations for the Garbage Olympics this year will be in Pine Brook and West Scranton, with the event consisting of a 2-hour competition between local groups to clean participating locations. To join in on the fun, register your team now!
The teams with the most trash collected, strangest item found, and most team spirit will all be awarded prizes. Be sure to bring your A-Game and go all out to win a shot at a team prize!
West Scranton updates: parking lot, garbage cans and more!
The public parking lot on N. Main Avenue has now reopened! Caution tape can be seen around the new landscaping beds, but visitors are welcome to park in the newly sealed and striped lot. We appreciate everyone's patience as we made safety improvements to the lot. In the coming weeks we will also be installing fencing and signage, but the lot will remain open during that period.
A new parking lot is not the only improvement coming to Main Avenue in West Side. We also installed a dozen trash and recycling bins between Lackawanna Avenue and Luzerne Street, with the aim to reduce litter along this bustling commercial corridor.
