College Connect and New Vol Picnic

We are excited to welcome our first-year students to explore all the College of Arts and Sciences has to offer during our College Connect event August 22. Faculty from all departments have the opportunity to engage with first-year students from 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
Faculty also have an opportunity to have lunch with our first-year students at the New Vol Picnic, hosted by New Student Orientation. Arts and Sciences students will be in the Humanities Plaza August 22 in two groups from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Faculty are welcome to attend either lunch!

UT Knoxville has joined The Conversation—an independent source for news articles and informed analysis written by the academic community and edited by journalists for the general public. Faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences are some of the most active participants of this partnership.
Religious Studies Lecturer Jack Love examines the various theories of the existence of Mount Sinai and provides insight on its early mentions in the Bible and throughout history. Political Science Professor Rich Pacelle’s examination of power and authority of the court was included in a roundup about the 2023 Supreme Court ruling on Alabama’s political districts.

Call for Proposals:
Exploring the Use and Integration of Generative AI Tools in Classroom Activities
The College of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with the AI Tennessee Initiative, invites faculty, staff, and graduate students to submit proposals investigating the integration of generative AI tools into classroom activities. This initiative aims to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment while addressing potential challenges and impacts. Proposals should focus on areas such as robust assessment methods, student digital literacy, formative feedback, disciplinary concerns, and bias mitigation. Learn More.

WBIR: Clarence Brown: Hollywood's 'forgotten master' left abiding legacy at UT
After stepping away from the motion picture business in the early 1950s, Brown would become one of UT's biggest benefactors. He and wife Marian Brown gave $500,000 to build the Clarence Brown Theatre on campus, and then after Marian died in 1993, the couple bequeathed $12 million to further benefit his alma mater.
