9/11 Day of Service
165 Grant, White Cloud elementary students take part
They listened, learned, engaged and did community service.
One hundred sixty-five third and fourth-graders from Grant and White Cloud elementary schools took part in TrueNorth Community Services’ 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.
The morning-long event on Tuesday, September 11, was held at the TrueNorth Service Center.
The students’ community service included packing snack bags for Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan; creating cards for Newaygo County Commission on Aging (COA) and Newaygo Medical Care Facility participants; and decorating holiday placemats for COA.
They heard from three local U.S. military veterans, Loraine Rodriguez and Diana Aue, both of Hesperia, and Becky Strong of Newaygo. They gained public safety insights and knowledge from officers with the Fremont Police and Newaygo Fire Departments and Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office.

Food Pantry Volunteers power efforts to provide for those in need We work hard to ensure our community’s struggling households get dependable access to food for active and healthy lives. Our TrueNorth Food Pantry provides for those in need.
Through the first six months of this year, 3,722 individuals from 1,450 households found help through the Food Pantry.
"Without volunteers, we could not do what we do," Community Food Coordinator Jennifer Zimmerman said.
“I figured after they had done it for (helped) me, I could could give them some time back to help the folks,” said Pat, a former Food Pantry client who now volunteers. “You get a blessing in return for doing it (helping).”
For Elena, volunteering is part of giving back and she enjoys the one-on-one interactions helping others.
“It is wonderful to give families that can take home what they need without feeling helpless,” she said. “I love that feeling.”
The most pressing volunteer need is working with families who access the Food Pantry. To volunteer for a four-hour weekly shift, contact Mike Voyt at 231.924.0641, ext. 119, or mvoyt@truenorthservices.org.
