Support United Way’s 2016 Campaign

It’s not too late to make a difference in our community! With just a few weeks left in the 2016 fundraising campaign, now is the time to make your donation to United Way of the Capital Region. If your workplace is not running a campaign, you can make a pledge online at www.uwcr.org/give, or you can contact Karen Overly Smith at ksmith@uwcr.org

This year labor and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania also supported United Way by providing three loaned labor leaders for two months to help with the State Employee Combined Appeal (SECA). Special thanks to Laurie Haines; Rebecca Moyer and Bill Wilson.

Also, thank you to all locals and union members who donated to this year’s United Way campaign. You truly LIVE UNITED!
Labor Day of Action November 2016

On November 12 the Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council (CLC) and United Way of the Capital Region mobilized more than 40 local union members, their families and friends for Labor Day of Action.

Volunteers completed projects such as sorting food donations and indoor and outdoor clean-up. One group of volunteers also helped behind the scenes at a 5K race that benefited a local park for children with disabilities

Labor Day of Action kicked off with a breakfast sponsored by Capital BlueCross. Adrian Buckner, vice president of community impact for United Way of the Capital Region, spoke to the group about the value of United Way’s partnership with organized labor and labor’s contribution to United Way’s strategic vision.

Layoff Rapid Response Assistance

Since 1946, the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and United Way Worldwide have partnered with state and local United Ways to provide services to members of organized labor, their families and their communities. By working together, both organizations have made an impact on core areas such as health, education, financial stability and basic needs.

Karen Overly Smith, United Way of the Capital Region’s labor liaison, works with families and individuals to provide the information, resources and services they need to get back on their feet, find new jobs or get the training and education needed for new careers. United Way and the AFL-CIO are committed to helping all working families who find themselves in difficult times. Our services are about solidarity rather than charity.
The Rapid Response team provides information about registering for unemployment compensation, accessing career development services and how to survive tough economic times. These services are available to any workplace at no cost.

For more information, contact Karen Overly Smith at 724.4060, or by e-mail at ksmith@uwcr.org.
