Hebrew College Welcomes New Rabbinical School Students

From former professionally trained chefs to rabbinical school transfers to professional actors, the incoming class of 2023-2024 rabbinical students come from many walks of life to train and prepare for ordination at Hebrew College. These future rabbis intend to serve the Jewish community with rich and diverse understandings of the rabbinate. Some of them may end up serving as army chaplains, others will be pulpit rabbis—but they will all leave a profound and indelible impact on the Jewish communities they will serve as rabbis.

Newton Solidarity Protest for Democracy in Israel

On August 24, Hebrew College President Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld spoke at a local event to support democracy in Israel.

"It is all too easy to give in to despair—and it’s even easier to get overwhelmed with the distractions of our daily lives—but this awe-inspiring protest movement reminds us day after day, week after week, month after month: Asur l’hityaesh. It is forbidden to despair. Simu lev. Pay attention—and keep paying attention. Od lo avda tikvateinu. To join the protests in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and in cities all over Israel is to feel the building of an ever-deepening, ever-broadening base of support for a better future—a true movement of hope."

Advice from a Hebrew College JTFGB Leader

“I first learned about JTFGB from my brother who did this amazing program all four years of high school. I was so excited to join this program to learn about nonprofits, fundraising, grant proposals, etc… I knew that whatever I learned from the program would stick with me throughout my life, and I also felt as though these subjects should be introduced more regularly to teens. Learning such topics can make such a huge impact on so many different groups of people, and I think that is something that has made this program so rewarding for me.”

By the time we chant Parashat Ki Tavo in synagogue this Shabbat—with its ritual enumeration of blessings and curses, and its passage of rebuke so excruciating we traditionally read it in a voice barely above a murmur—my elder son, blessing of my heart, should be safely back at college for another year. As I write this now, he is still in my home for just another few days, already dreaming of rejoining his friends on campus while I ponder adjusting again to saying goodbye to this man-child, this intimate stranger whose very existence remade me.
