Landmark Jewish Women’s Archive Oral History Collection Features Several Hebrew College Women
November 1 | 7-8:30 pm | Hebrew College's Mascott Beit Midrash
To celebrate the launch of JWA’s new Nicki Newman Tanner Oral History Collection, Hebrew College and campus partner JWA will co-sponsor “Woman, Rabbi, History Maker: Tracing Religious Leadership Through Life Stories,” a panel discussion about women rabbis, leadership, and what it means to make history. The new collection helps to restore Jewish women to their rightful place in our communal narratives and includes a wide range of voices—those of leaders and activists, but also of “ordinary” community members often doing extraordinary things. Event panelists include Hebrew College President Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld, Rabbi Margie Klein Ronkin `11, Rabbi Shayna Rhodes `08, and Rav Claudia Kreiman, with moderator Rabbi Tiferet Berenbaum `11.

Welcoming Our Four New Trustees
| |
Great leadership strengthens institutions. And when that leadership brings a combination of spiritual, educational, financial and investment expertise, philanthropy, and deep knowledge of Jewish community, extraordinary things can happen. Hebrew College is grateful to be in this position with the addition of Rabbi Avi Killip`14, Rabbi Steven Lewis `11, Suzanne Priebatsch, and Laure Garnick to our Board of Trustees—where their collective expertise, new ideas, and insights will propel the College into our second century educating Jewish leaders and invigorate the College’s mission to reimagine Jewish learning and leadership for an interconnected world.

From Enemy Aliens to a Free People

By Rabbi Minna Bromberg `10, Founder and President of Fat Torah

While Simchat Torah celebrations are often boisterous, my favorite part is that moment of sweet intimacy when I get to take a Torah in my arms. I have often experienced this moment as akin to snuggling a small loved one. Even if I am in a crowd, hugging a Torah scroll always feels like now it’s just me and my baby. In fact, in the many, many years that I wanted children and did not have them, Simchat Torah evoked this particularly longing in me. Holding Torah and feeling held by it, feeling like everything was right with the world right now, and at the same time wishing I had this kind of sweetest of sweet moments with actual children of my own.

Path to the Rabbinate: Aaron Berc
"I have always been enamored with stories. How they captivate our attention, help us understand the world around us, and how they help us find meaning in the abyss of monotony. Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and other great modern myths have long enthralled me with their mystical religions and songs of heroes of long past ages. Stories of freedom from persecution, of the trials and journeys of a human life, the beautiful harmony of feeling connected. I came to rabbinical school at Hebrew College in my mid-thirties, after spending most of the decade plus after finishing my undergraduate degree in a state of spiritual wandering. It took me most of my twenties and early thirties to understand that my inherited tradition was just as mythic, that Torah is the song of my ancestors, and when it's sung with my voice, its stories and melodies can be a guide out of the ordinary."

In Memoriam: Alice Shalvi
Hebrew College mourns the loss of Alice Shalvi, educator, feminist activist, social advocate, and professor emerita of English literature. Shalvi was one of the founders of Israeli feminism and a matriarch of the Orthodox feminist movement, a revered educator, founder of the Israel Women's network, and recipient of numerous awards including the Israel Prize and an honorary degree from Hebrew College in 2019. "Alice was an eloquent advocate for feminism, equality, human rights, peace, and justice in Israel and around the world. She was a personal mentor, role model, and inspiration to so many, including many of us in the Hebrew College community, and she will be deeply missed. We will do our very best to honor her legacy,” said Hebrew College President Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld.
May her memory be a blessing.
