Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi Book Launch

On September 3, more than 170 people tuned in for Hebrew College's online event celebrating the publication of Zalman Schachter-Shalomi: Essential Teachings edited by Rabbi Or Rose (above), director of the the Miller Center for Interreligious Learning & Leadership at Hebrew College, and Pir Netanel Miles-Yepez.

Changing Hats

On July 1, Rabbi Gita Karasov`20 (right) made the transition from Hebrew College student to alumna and Director of Admissions & Student Life for the College's ordination programs. So far, she loves it!

When I reflect on my experience at Hebrew College, I am now struck by how much I grew and changed during my time as a student. Yet when you are deep in the middle of this process, it can be hard to see the impacts in the moment. I am enjoying the opportunity to witness individuals and our community growing and transforming in real time, and appreciate being able to see the power of this process with new perspective.

Nireh Or for 5781

"We created the Nireh Or calendar to ground us in sacred time as we navigate a feeling of timelessness and time-blurring in our world. Each page includes a unique piece of artwork by my partner Lizzie, and a short piece of Torah by me for the month. Distilling huge concepts into less than 200 words is a skill I definitely acquired at Hebrew College, being encouraged by my rabbis and teachers to bring the Torah into my own lived experience and articulate it from that place, in my own words."

PsalmSeason: Psalm 126

We are pleased to highlight vocalist, composer, and Brontosaurus Records CEO Lauren Henderson's musical interpretation of Psalm 126. The Miller Center and Interfaith Youth Core launched the 18-week PsalmSeason project in response to the unfolding global pandemic and upheaval over racial injustice.

Parashat Nitzavim-Vayelech (Deuteronomy 29:9-31:30)

A bougainvillea flower, the corner of his big sister’s latest artwork, a bit of cracker lost last week and now found, the foil wrapping from the top of a wine bottle. These are just some of the things that my suddenly-crawling-everywhere eight-month-old has managed to pick up from the floor and put in his mouth in the last few days. As terrifying and guilt-inducing as it can sometimes be to watch, I’m in awe of his growing ability to safely move things into and out of his mouth. (He’s definitely still working on the “out of” part). This tasting as we go is one of our first ways of knowing our world and developing a sense of what is good and not so good in our surroundings.

Hebrew College mourns the passing of Dena Micley z"l. Dena, of blessed memory, and her family had a long and deep relationship with Hebrew College. She graduated from Hebrew Teachers College in 1945 and was married to Hebrew College Professor Jacques K. Mikliszanski z"l. She was beloved mother and mother-in-law of Gilda (HTC graduate) and her husband Alan Flashman (Prozdor graduate 1966) of Omer, Israel; Bruce and Lisa Micley; and Robert Micley and Carolyn Henderson.

Our deepest condolences go out to the entire Micley-Flashman family. May the Holy One comfort them among the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
