Dear Partner in ministry,

If someone showed up at our door and demanded the treasures of Georgetown Presbyterian Church, what would we hand over?
The early church in Rome faced that question in 258 during Emperor Valerian's persecution. Officials ordered the deacon Lawrence to bring them the church's wealth. Lawrence asked for a few days and the officials waited, no doubt picturing gold and silver. After a few days, Lawrence presented a crowd behind him: the city’s poor, the sick, the forgotten. “These,” he said, “are our jewels.” Tradition tells us it cost him his life, and it’s a story that has never stopped challenging the church.

It challenges me. I think our treasures are closer than we expect: the neighbors who sleep outside, the ones we walk past on Wisconsin Ave. Sometimes the jewels of a community show up in surprising places and people, and our job isn't to rescue them but to know them, to be good neighbors and build the beloved community together.
One person who knows our neighbors well is Claire Wilson, Executive Director of the Georgetown Ministry Center (GMC), one of our mission partners. Since 1987, when Georgetown’s congregations helped found it, GMC has been a place where neighbors experiencing homelessness can get casework and advocacy, take a shower, do laundry, and use a phone or computer, while its team also reaches out on the streets to build trust and connect people to help. Claire is joining us this Sunday, November 1, at 10am in Adult Education as part of our first-Sunday focus on Mission. Come curious, and bring a friend.
And if you'd like to put this into practice, every weekday from November 30 to December 18 we'll serve hot dinners at GPC through GMC Extends. Sign up for any open slot, even if others are already signed up that night. And be in touch with me if you have any questions!
Take good care,
Grace
