LVCA Program Manager Leads National Training for Adult Educators

Steven Reid, LVCA Program Manager, is working with ProLiteracy to lead training for tutors and teachers working with ESOL learners. ProLiteracy is an international nonprofit organization supporting adult literacy programs nationwide.
"It has been such a wonderful experience getting to share with people from all over the country, and beyond," said Steven. "The coaching sessions that follow up the webinars have been a great opportunity to meet people from different literacy organizations. Many of these individuals come from small programs that don't have the resources to access professional development, so it's been amazing to get to share with these folks."
We're honored that LVCA staff have the opportunity to share their expertise and experience with other adult educators. You can read more about Teacher Training Plus and Steven's workshops on ProLiteracy's website.
Countdown to Wordplay:
Two Months to Go!
We're up to 25 teams, and there's still time to join in on the fun.
Wordplay is a team-based trivia competition for people who love words, vocabulary, pop culture, history, literature, and showing off their smarts. Each team is comprised of three members. The audience is invited to play along and cheer for their favorite team! The Paramount will open ticket sales later this month.
Funds raised through Wordplay support adult learners as they achieve their educational goals. Team sponsorship rates start at $600. Teams can pay online, send a check, or use crowdsourcing to raise their fees. Sponsors can donate in-kind goods of the same value in place of their team fee. Schools, churches, and nonprofits who register their fundraising pages before February 14 will receive a $50 donation from the LVCA Board to get their fundraising started!

Citizenship Program Updates

Between July 1 and December 31, 2022, 29 students passed their citizenship interviews. We had 61 students enroll in our group classes, and some received additional support from a one-on-one tutor. Additionally, we offered practice interviews to students to help them prepare for their USCIS interview, and 19 students participated in a practice session.
Our winter session of classes started on January 10. We are offering four sessions of classes, all online. Over 53 students are enrolled. The winter session runs through March 14, and the spring session will start in late April.
We learned in January that USCIS is revising several components of the citizenship interview. Our staff is monitoring the developments closely so that we can ensure our students are prepared for the changes.
