Danz Elementary School is located in a census track with a high poverty level, the schools received 100% free lunch meals. Students living in poverty tend to have lower consumption of fruits and vegetables. FoodWIse is offering a series of lessons, which include social marketing materials that each student will take home. In March, FoodWIse taught 4 sessions to the 1st graders at Danz Elementary School. There were three classrooms with 12-16 students in each class. Through the Read for Health curriculum, students listened to books about My Plate, eating the rainbow, and healthy habits. Along with the stories, we had discussions about the books, had an activity, and created a snack. One activity the students were able to create was a fruit and vegetable rainbow. They also were able to decorate a lunch bag with the 5 food groups. One teacher stated that “students also talk more often about healthy food." Another teacher stated, “The students have been excited about bringing the recipes home to share with their families.”
