From the Reading Pile: Last August, Scott Fybush and I took a trip to Michiana and West Michigan. Read Scott's chronicle of our adventure.
Mark down March 14 through March 28: That's the time when several IRW-land radio stations can file new FM translator CP applications. All of these are singleton applications. During this time, the stations will file a long form FCC Form 349 online. Here's the list:
Woof Boom Radio Muncie for 101.1fm, Anderson.
The Moody Bible Institute of Chicago for 101.3fm, Anderson.
Princeton Broadcasting Co., Inc. for 94.3fm, Princeton.
WSJM, Inc. (Mid-West Family Broadcasting) for 106.1fm, St. Joseph, Michigan.
Northeast
Where Are They Now? Former then-WKJG (Channel 33, Fort Wayne) News Director Bob Rockstroh will become the next News Director for WFFF-TV in the Burlington, Vermont/Plattsburgh, New York market.
Northcentral
Where Are They Now? Former WSJV-TV News Director Perry Boxx will join WPSD-TV in Paducah, Kentucky. Here's Mr. Boxx's internal e-mail announcing his departure from WEEK-TV/WHOI-TV in Peoria, Illinois, and the WPSD-TV internal e-mail introducing him. (h/t Rick Gevers).
Eastcentral
Indiana Public Radio's NPR affiliate/WBST (92.1fm, Muncie) will soon have a new tower. Their current 40-year-old tower will be dismantled. The new tower and current tower are next to each other, just off IN-332, west of Muncie. The new solid steel tower has a Shively three bay antenna, with radomes. Also, WBST purchased a new 5kW GatesAir transmitter, running 3kW, ERP. This new transmitter will succeed WBST's 30-year-old Harris tube transmitter. Finally, WBST will also add a new Orban audio processor.
Central
Where Are They Now? Former WRTV-TV News Director Tim Larson exits KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Westcentral
A judge sentenced both John Collins and Kathleen Featherstone in the death of Terre Haute DJ Matt Luecking. Mr. Collins received a 60 year sentence, while Ms. Featherstone received a 30 year sentence.
Jade Scott exits Heartland Media's CBS affiliate/WTHI-TV (Channel 10, Terre Haute) as Digital Executive Producer. Ms. Scott will become the new Digital Director for DLC Media's 9 radio stations. Ms. Scott succeeds Shelley Crooks who will move to a part-time position at DLC’s Brazil location.
Southeast
Where Are They Now? Former WQMF/WTFX PD Charlie Steele will become OM for the Dick Broadcasting radio stations in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Southwest
Where Are They Now? Former Evansville broadcaster and programmer Sky Phillips exits WDSD in the Wilmington/Dover, Delaware market.
This Week in Indiana Radio History
Sign-on dates seem to be a prickly matter, subject to great debate, and mostly impossible to confirm. If there's something we need to add to the "calendar," please let us know. Please e-mail us if you have updated information.
March 11: In 1949, 1370am, Bloomington signs on as WTTS (The "TT" stands for owner Sarkes Tarzian's son Tom Tarzian). Today it's WGCL. In 1971, Philo T. Farsnworth dies. Age 64. In 1993, 98.7fm in Battle Ground signs on as WIIZ. Today it is WASK-FM. In 2008, 88.3fm in Muncie signs on as WKMV, and still is.
March 12: In 1964, 1500am, Indianapolis signs on signs on as WBRI, and still is. In 2001, a three way frequency swap occurred in Fort Wayne. First, WCKZ (102.3fm) ended their simulcast a day earlier with WYSR (94.1fm). The WCKZ call letters moved to 94.1fm and began an Urban AC format as "The Wiz." The 96.3fm WEJE call letters and alternative format moved to 102.3fm. 96.3fm flipped to a country music format, as WWWD. Today, the WCKZ calls are on 91.3fm in Orland, 102.3fm airs Spanish music as WGBJ, and 96.3fm airs Classic Rock as WXKE.
March 13: In 2005, WGLD (104.5fm, Indianapolis changed formats from Oldies ("Gold 104.5") to the Hot AC/Classic Hits "Jack-FM" hybrid mix at 6:00pm.
March 14: In 1974, WLYV (1450am, Fort Wayne) changed formats from Top 40 to Country, with new owners. Until 1980, Jack Nicklaus owned the station under the corporate name "Golden Bear Broadcasting". In 2007, Backyard Broadcasting (Anderson/Muncie) News Director Tom Hammond dies. Age 40. In 2011, former WMEE morning man Steve Kerrigan dies. Age 52.
March 15: In 1954, Channel 52 in Elkhart signs on as WSJV ("St. Joseph river Valley"). WSJV moved channels and is now on Channel 28.
March 16: In 1956, 1270am in Elkhart signs on as WCMR for owner Clarence Moore. After changing call letters to WFRN in 1993, the WCMR call letters returned in 2008.
March 17: In 1957, 95.5fm in Indianapolis signs on as WFMS ("Williams FM Service," for owner Martin Risser Williams).

Z96-5 WAZY, a heritage Top 40 station in Lafayette, Indiana and Star City Broadcasting are looking for a full-time Assistant Program Director/Afternoon Drive Host. Duties include:
Hosting an afternoon drive shift live every weekday.
Producing/updating imaging, promos, and liners for use on the station.
Working promotional events and remotes as needed.
Help with music scheduling as needed.
Updating the station’s website and posting on our various social media platforms.
Help develop promotions/contests for the station.
