BOOK CLUB - Not a Box
Antoinette Portis' book Not a Box  is on Fay's Primary School summer reading list this year, and it's perfect to inspire creativity during long summer days. The story follows a rabbit as it uses a box to create many other things that are not a box. What would your child turn their box into?
LITERACY AND NUMERACY - Reading Aloud
Did you know that the number of words that a child knows when he or she enters kindergarten is the most important predictor of their success or failure? Reading aloud with your child can grow their vocabulary and introduces many words and concepts that might not be used in everyday life.
This summer, incorporate reading into your schedule by making weekly visits to your local library. While there, let your child select the books that interest them to further their engagement.
Check out the Parenting Advice section below for more ideas regarding reading this summer.
ARTS & CRAFTS - Drive-In Movie Car
Bring the novelty of a drive-in movie to your own living room or backyard this summer, or even to Southborough Recreation's Summer Movies in the Park.
Materials Needed:
  • Large Cardboard Box
  • Paint/Markers/Crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue/Tape/Stapler
  • Miscellaneous Craft Supplies
Directions:
  • Gather a large cardboard box and cut the top off. If your box is tall, cut the edges so your child will be able to see out of the box when sitting inside of it.
  • Let your child use their creativity to turn the box into a car that they will be able to sit in during the next movie night. Some ideas are below.
    • Use paper plates as tires.
    • Use plastic or paper cups as headlights.
    • Cut a door out of the side of the box.
    • Put blankets or pillows inside for a comfy seat.
    • Create a license plate using your child's name.
DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONE - Creative Thinking
A challenge for many young children is understanding that a problem can have multiple solutions and that their first idea might not always be the best. Projects that involve a design thinking component encourage brainstorming and help kids get used to generating lots of ideas before narrowing them down to the one that they want to pursue. Parents can support this process by resisting the urge to step in when kids are struggling with their ideas. Give them space to generate and evaluate their own ideas rather than solving the “What should I make?” or “How can I do this?” dilemmas for them.

Summertime, with its relaxed routine, family vacations, and travel, can seem like the perfect opportunity to rededicate yourself to reading with your child. However, the summer slide is no myth! All the things that make summer such a great time to read can also make it challenging to establish and maintain any sort of routine. Longer days lead to later bedtimes, and the schedule at home usually goes right out the window when everyone is on vacation. So, make those summer reading goals realistic by getting creative and incorporating reading into your family's schedule. Here are four tips for making your summer reading goals a reality.
