The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications wants to hear from JMC students on your experience in the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Broadcast students stepped up and interviewed former Jayhawks. The interviews were shown during the University’s EVER ONWARD campaign launch on Oct. 19 at the Jayhawk Welcome Center. The campaign aims to raise funds for the benefit of students and faculty as well as academic and research facilities.

Gus Baylow interviewed Kevin Harlan, who is a television sports announcer who broadcasts NFL, NBA and college basketball games for CBS, TNT and TBS.
Sydney Clark interviewed Gillian Flynn, who is an author, screenwriter and producer who is known for writing "Sharp Objects," "Dark Places" and "Gone Girl."
Abbey Lord interviewed Bill Kurtis, who is a television journalists, producer, narrator, news anchor and currently with NPR's news comedy/quiz show "Wait Wait... Don't Tell me!"
Shamaria Massenburg interviewed former KU and current San Antonio Spurs' point guard Devonte’ Graham.
Students also attended the campaign launch on Oct. 19 and conducted in-person interviews with notable alums such as Mike Happe, President and CEO of Winnebago Industries and Lydia Bebee, KU Endowment Association capital campaign chair and principal at LIBB Advisors LLC.

Assistant Professor of the Practice Rebekka Schlichting went to Paris to attend the Eurasia 3rd World Conference on Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education over fall break. She was chosen as a distinguished speaker for her presentation titled "Reporting in third world spaces with obscure, inconsistent and absent data.”
At the conference, she had the pleasure of meeting and learning from brilliant academics from around the world who are making this world a better place.
Associate Professor Mugur Geana's research article "A Friendly Conversation: Developing an eHealth Intervention to Increase COVID-19 Testing and Vaccination Literacy Among Women with Criminal and Legal System Involvement" has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Health Communication. The study, conducted in collaboration with researchers from KUMC, showcases the intervention developed as part of a $1.5 million, two-year grant award from the National Institutes of Health (Co-PIs Geana and Ramaswamy).

Associate Professor Teri Finneman moderated the Employer Perspectives on the Kansas Workforce panel during the Kansas Economic Policy Conference. She was also one of several faculty members invited to the chancellor's residence for a Board of Regents reception.
Professor Lisa McLendon gave a workshop for the Center for Teaching Excellence called “You COULD assign a research paper, but …” that focused on having students use CC Express for a multimedia project instead of writing a research paper. Her JMC 201 students’ final project from fall 2022 was the example.

Celebrate KU Homecoming with The Dole Institute of Politics at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24. JMC School alum and former Dole Institute Fellow Jerry Seib will moderate “A Question of Respect: Bringing Us Together in a Deeply Divided Nation.” He’ll be joined by pollsters Celinda Lake and Ed Goeas to discuss their new book and finding common ground in today’s politics. If you're unable to attend in person, the discussion will be available to watch on YouTube.

More than 150 students attended the Journalism Career Fair, connecting with 23 companies, on Thursday at Stauffer-Flint Hall. The 157 students were the highest turnout for the fall semester since the event moved to Stauffer-Flint in fall 2021. It ranks second overall in the five career fairs at the venue, second to the 191 students who turned out in spring 2023.

JMC Alum Cami Koons wins regional Emmy |
|
|
Cami Koons won a regional Emmy for her story on Flatland, "What's the Deal with Kansas Cannabis Laws?" earlier this month. Koons partnered with Emily Woodring on the story. Koons is a rural affairs reporter for Flatland KC in collaboration with Report for America. Her reporting focuses on agriculture, rural issues, cannabis and the arts.
