Mason's Institute for a Sustainable Earth and Future Earth’s US Global Hub are seeking a Research and Innovation Officer


Mason's Institute for a Sustainable Earth and Future Earth’s US Global Hub invite leaders who are collaborative, strategic, insightful and have demonstrated excellence in leading interdisciplinary research initiatives to apply for this position.

The Research and Innovation Officer will be responsible for:
  • Coordinating and motivating a global team of Future Earth science officers;
  • Leading efforts to create transdisciplinary communities of research and practice within the Institute for a Sustainable Earth (ISE);
  • Advising Future Earth leadership and ISE leadership on research and innovation strategy;
  • Identifying and developing synergistic activities and initiatives between Future Earth and ISE;
  • Leading grants and partnerships that further the capacity and impact of the Future Earth Research and Innovation portfolio and the work of ISE.

Mason to Host the International Global Energy and Water Exchanges Project


The International Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX) project is a NASA-sponsored program that aims to provide a better understanding of the global water cycle. Mason is partnering with GEWEX and will host the project office. GEWEX will be a part of Mason’s Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) the largest single academic group of climate dynamics and climate modeling experts in the United States. 

Mason Recognized by the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE)


Mason is featured by the NCSE as its member institution of the month for July 2020. The NCSE feature recongnizes Mason's leadership in the area of sustainability, including its educational, operational, and research initiatives. Through its sustainability oriented departments, institutes, and centers, Mason is strongly committed to educating sustainability leaders, conducting transdisciplinary research, investing in green infrastructure, and promoting and supporting socially conscious entrepreneurship.

2020 Curriculum Impact Grants Awarded


The Provost's Curriculum Impact Grants
support the development of innovative curricular ideas and pilot programs that enhance Mason Impact and other cross-unit, multidisciplinary undergraduate and graduate curriculum development activities. In 2020, curricular proposals focused on high-impact experiential learning curriculum that engage students on topics within the Sustainable Development Goals framework were encouraged. The following eight curricular projects were selected for funding from 18 highly competitive submissions.

Schar School Webinar Series on Social Justice in America


The Schar School of Policy and Government will present a series of virtual webinars examining different aspects of “Social Justice in America”. Schar School faculty members will moderate discussions and add their academic expertise to dialogues with former elected officials, current practitioners, journalists, and leaders in organizations involved in human and civil rights.

Mark J. Rozell, dean of the Schar School, will host the hour-long sessions. A question-and-answer period with viewers of the virtual panels will follow each discussion. Each webinar will begin at noon. The sessions are free and open to the public.

Dear Colleague Letter: Engineering Research to Advance Solutions for Environmental PFAS (ERASE-PFAS)


The Environmental Engineering program announces a special funding focus on new science and technologies for the treatment and remediation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to improve and protect public and environmental health. The objective of the Environmental Engineering program at NSF is to support research on the prevention, minimization, mitigation, and/or remediation of environmental pollution to protect human and ecological health.
Priority topics for this special funding focus include:
  • Research that enables the development of technologies for mitigation, remediation, and/or treatment of PFAS in the environment
  • Research that elucidates the underlying limitations of PFAS transformation reactions that could lead to potentially transformative, feasible technologies for PFAS remediation; and
  • Research that identifies biological, chemical, and/or physical reaction mechanisms for the treatment of fluorotelomer-based fluorosurfactants in AFFFs and other products.

Saltonstall-Kennedy Grant Program


The Saltonstall-Kennedy Grant Program funds projects that address the needs of fishing communities, optimize economic benefits by building and maintaining sustainable fisheries, and increase other opportunities to keep working waterfronts viable.
NOAA Fisheries seeks applications that demonstrate direct benefits to the U.S. fishing industries and applications which involve:
  • Fishing community participation aimed at helping fishing communities to resolve issues that affect their ability to fish.
