Travel Reminders


Traveling to Amherst College for the first time this winter?  Check out these reminders from the OIS before you go:
OIS Advising:
By appointment: in-person and virtual options available
Drop-in hours will resume on January 30, 2023 for the Spring 2023 semester (drop-in hours are held in Keefe 219, no appointment needed):

Review the Travel Checklist before departing the U.S.
As an F-/J-1 student, be sure to carry the following documentation with you when you travel to the United States:
  • valid passport, with at least 6 months of validity remaining
  • valid F-1 or J-1 visa
  • A current I-20 or DS-2019 (as a new student arriving for the first time on your new I-20/DS-2019, you are not yet expected to have a travel signature on that document)
  • Recommended: A copy of your I-901 SEVIS fee receipt
  • Recommended: Proof of funding (financial aid award, bank statements, etc.)
  • Recommended: Proof of admission/enrollment
Vaccination & Testing Required for Air-Travel to the U.S.

COVID TESTING: 
Air passengers (age 2+) traveling to the United States from China, Hong Kong, or Macau, and those traveling from Seoul, Toronto, and Vancouver who have been in China, Hong Kong, or Macau in the past 10 days, must present a negative result from a COVID viral test taken within one two days of departure, per CDC Announces Negative COVID-19 Test Requirement from Air Passengers Entering the United States from the People’s Republic of ChinaThere is no COVID testing requirement for air travelers who do not fit this criteria, though testing is highly recommended for all travelers.

Checking in with the OIS after Arrival in the U.S.

Once you have arrived in the U.S., you are required to "report" to the OIS.  You can complete this requirement quickly and easily via the OIS's F-1/J-1 New Student Check-in Form. 
This form is mandatory for all newly arrived F-1 and J-1 students.  Be sure to complete this form soon after your arrival. 
Failure to complete the form will jeopardize your F-1/J-1 status.
