Physicians Thriving at Work

By Dr. Carrie Horwitch
We know how challenging these past few months have been for our profession. It is important that we continue to work toward reducing moral distress and burnout among physicians and other clinicians.
The new KCMS Wellness Committee is one avenue to help accomplish these goals (see flyer below)

In addition, the Washington State Medical Association and WSMA Foundation have this as a key strategic priority through the Healthy Doctors, Healthier Patients programs.

White Coats Black Lives Essay

Dr. Meaghan O’Malley shares her thoughts of what the Seattle White Coats Black Lives rally meant to her.
On a beautiful Saturday morning, my husband, two daughters, and I
masked up, put on our white coats, and joined 7,000 other healthcare
workers and friends in a march from Harborview Medical Center to
Seattle City Hall as part of #WhiteCoatsForBlackLives. What
transpired that morning was incredibly moving, powerful, and will not
easily be forgotten...

CME Webinar: Eliminating Disparities in Healthcare

King County Medical Society is working to create a CME about the racial inequities experienced in healthcare as a patient and as a provider.
Until we are ready to announce that CME, we did find an opportunity to learn more about this critical topic. Rockpointe is hosting a live CME Webinar titled "Eliminating Disparities in Healthcare: What Can You Do?" on Thursday, July 9th at 10 a.m. PT.
Their CME seeks to address the issue in a one-hour-long program that will provide physicians with an understanding of the causes of healthcare disparities and tools to help achieve healthcare equity. Webinar content will also be available as an on-demand, CME web course.

The Time for ‘The Talk’ Is Now

by Dr. Laura Schellenberg Johnson
Dr. Johnson is a palliative care and internal medicine physician practicing at EvergreenHealth.  Johnson recently shared practical information with NY Times readers on having "The Talk" to clarify priorities and decision-making in healthcare during the pandemic.
With cases on the rise in WA state, this is an excellent time to continue these discussions.  Johnson's story includes checking in with her own mother regarding ventilators and COVID-19.
