Black Graduation, June 7 and Multicultural Student Graduation, June 15

Will you be graduating this year? There are two graduation events (besides commencement) that you should know about! First, the Black Student Union and Black Cultural Affairs Board is hosting Black to the Future: The Next Generation Graduation from 2-3pm on June 7 in Hoffman Hall.
The next event is the PSU Multicultural Graduation. Cnsider applying to be a speaker at this ceremony that will be held on Friday, June 15, 2018 at 6pm in the SMSU Ballroom. If you would like to apply to be a speaker, visit the Multicultural Graduation Ceremony site for instructions on applying to be a speaker and a participant in this June's ceremony. (The registration for participating in  this event has closed, but registration will re-open for limited spots on Friday, May 4 at noon.)

HIRING BLACK STUDIES MAJORS!

Looking for  little something to add to your resume? The Black Studies Department is hiring students ($16.50/hr) to serve as moderators for students presenting on May 3 at the Grant High School African American Literature/Studies Sympoisum at PSU! Black Studies' McNair Student Scholar

Black Studies majors are representing in the McNair Student Scholars Program at PSU! Congratulations to our newest program scholar, Zhane McClyde (Faculty Mentor: Dr. Derrais Carter). We also are giving major kudos to Tessara Dudley (Faculty Mentor: Dr. Shirley A. Jackson) who will be entering the History graduate program at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in the fall. 

Student Essay Contest

PSU’s Commission on the Status of Women and the Diversity Action Council offer an essay award to support undergraduate and graduate students who are working toward a degree or certificate in any PSU program and will be enrolled at PSU during the fall term of 2018.
Entries must be received by 12:00 PM on April 24, 2018.

Two awards of $1,000: one to an undergraduate and one to a graduate student. Winners will be notified in early May 2018, and recognized at the PSU President’s Diversity Awards event on June 7th.

Students of Color Support Group

Did you know there is a Students of Color Support Group? This group provides a safe space for student to process thoughts and feeling about their experiences of their racial/ethnic identities (including multiracial identity) and how that impacts their everyday experiences and worldview. This group also serves as a safe space to talk about experiences of microagressions and racism. Meetings are on Fridays from 11:30am-1:00pm. 

Nominate an Oustanding Black Studies Faculty Member! 

It's that time to nominate a professor in Black Studies for the John Eliot Teaching Award. Have you had a Black Studies professor who changed the way you think about the world? Yourself? Your opportunities? What kind of information did this person share that had an impact on what you learned and hope to learn and do in the future? If you are a Black Studies student, you will receive a link to a survey soon. Please nominate your favorite Black Studies professor!

Faculty Accomplishments

Dr. Ethan Johnson has a new forthcoming publication “Comparing Black Representations of Blackness in Portland, Oregon and Esmeraldas, Ecuador: Differences and Continuities,” in Relating Worlds of Racism: Dehumanization, Belonging and the Normativity of Whiteness, ed. Essed, Farquharson, Pillay, and White (Palgrave  Macmillan Press).

2nd Annual Students of Urban Leadership (SOUL) Summit


The 2nd Annual SOUL Summit is scheduled for Friday, May 4, 2018, from 9 am - 4 pm and will take place on the Cascade campus of Portland Community College in the Moriarty Arts & Humanities Building Auditorium (705 Killingsworth Street, Portland, Oregon).This summit is designed to bring high school and college age students of color together to address concerns regarding education, health, and identity.  Some of the workshops include financial literacy for college, implicit bias in higher education, and stress management.  Please see the attached report that highlights the origins, purpose, and objectives of the SOUL Summit.
