TIPS FOR FIGHTING HOLIDAY DEPRESSION FOR SENIORS AND THEIR CARETAKERS
The holidays can be a difficult time for older adults who may be dealing with the loss of loved ones and past traditions. While feeling blue can be normal, depression isn’t. It is important for caretakers to be on the lookout for signs of depression, such as persistent sadness, frequent tearfulness, weight changes and changes in sleep patterns.
Plan holiday outings and events Going caroling, driving to see Christmas lights, decorating, making holiday crafts, holiday shopping, etc. are all great ways to get in the spirit
Listen It is important for them to be able to talk about their feelings and to know that they’re being heard
Plan quiet time  Plan some quiet time between the holiday parties and family visits so that they can recharge their batteries
Don’t forget to take care of yourself  Ask others to help lighten your load, meditate and avoid striving for perfection

HELPING NEIGHBORS IN NEED
Our charitable programs continue to grow, assisting over 300 people this past year. One of the residents assisted was Hazel.  She lives in our South Trolinger Apartments and was struggling due to limited mobility. Her fixed income made it hard for her to purchase a lift chair and she continued have difficulties rising from a seated position. Thanks to the generosity of our donors the Warm Hearth Foundation provided Hazel with the lift chair she needed to help her remain independent. She continues to live in her home surrounded by her friends.
Please consider a gift to the Neighbors in Need campaign this year. Your support allows us to help seniors like Hazel each day with basic needs.

BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE, WARM UP AT THE VILLAGE CENTER
If you’ve noticed that cold weather is causing you joint pain flare-ups or headaches, or exacerbating other chronic pain, take heart. There are many things you can do to combat the frigid effects of winter. Fight the cold taking advantage of our beautiful Village Center.
Swim
Come swim or soak in our warm, indoor saltwater pool. The water’s buoyancy supports the body’s weight, which reduces stress on the joints and minimizes pain. Plus the 82 to 88 degrees – can help soothe pain and relax  muscles.
Massage
Massage is a great way to combat the stiffness that can lead to pain. The fitness center contracts with several massage therapists to provide relaxation and restorative services in a spa setting.
Keep Moving
Don’t cut down on physical activity in the colder months. This will only lead to a decreased range of motion and exacerbate any joint pain you might be experiencing. Come to the many fitness classes offered or workout in the gym while taking in the beautiful view outside from our 17 feet tall windows.
Hydrate
Even mild dehydration can make you more sensitive to pain, so don’t stop drinking water just because it’s cold outside. If water doesn’t appeal as much during the winter months, come sit by the fire and sip some hot tea, cocoa or coffee from the Huckleberry Café.
For more information or to make a massage appointment call 540-443-3474.

THINK YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE IS FINE? THINK AGAIN…
Have you heard the guidelines for high blood pressure have changed? It’s now considered high at 130/80!! Now about 50% of American adults have high blood pressure. Is that you? Blood pressure is one of the most important screenings because high blood pressure usually has no symptoms so it can’t be detected without being measured. High blood pressure greatly increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. Warm Hearth at Home is here to help by providing free blood pressure and sugar screenings every month at the Village Center.
