Dear Student,
We write to share important information about how to dispose of unwanted mattresses and furniture if you are vacating an apartment this summer.
Before you decide to throw furniture away, consider making a donation! Check out our Move Out Donation webpage and our Guide to Sustainable Move Out. However, if your items have truly seen better days, please read on.
Medford
The City of Medford has enacted a new ordinance that makes it illegal to leave mattresses or other furniture curbside without making arrangements for their disposal.
Bulk waste (furniture). If you are vacating an apartment in Medford and need to dispose bulk items such as mirrors, rugs, or other furniture you must make a reservation to have those items collected on your recycling day. There is a three-item limit.
Please call Waste Management at 800-972-4545 to schedule a pickup. Bulk items should not be put out on the sidewalk until the late afternoon or early evening of the day prior to your scheduled pick up. Violations will be subject to a $300 fine.
Mattresses must be recycled. To schedule an appointment for a mattress pick up, please call HandUp at 774-271-8744 to make an appointment. The charge for each mattress is $55.
Somerville
Bulk waste (furniture other than mattresses). Somerville allows you to dispose of two items per week curbside with regular trash. Place your bulk waste out by 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
Mattresses. You must contact 311 in advance to schedule a mattress pickup. Reach 311 by phone at 617-666-3311 to schedule a pickup.
The mattress/box spring will be picked up curbside one day after the regular trash day with one exception. For residents with Friday trash pickup, mattresses will also be picked up on Friday.
Mattresses must be placed outside by 7 a.m. on pickup day. They can go outside as early as 4 p.m. the night before.
Additional Information
If you live in a city other than Medford or Somerville, please consult your community's city website for recyling and disposal rules and information.
Thank you for your cooperation and being a good neighbor.
