Problem Solves with Compassion
After going the extra mile to provide a passenger with compassionate and respectful service, Natasha Tunstall Smith (she/her) with Delta Air Lines received this letter of thanks:
“A last-minute flight cancellation meant I was not going to get back home as I had planned.
I raced to the airport since there was a slim chance I could make it on a Delta flight. Unfortunately, I didn’t quite get there in time, but Natasha sat down with me and was able to help me calm down and work through the options to get home.
I really appreciated her help. Having someone with her friendly, respectful attitude towards customer service is a real asset to your airport.”

What's New with PDX Next: Baggage Claim Closures and Milestones
Baggage Claim: Between Monday, Dec. 12, and Friday, Dec. 16, baggage carousels 2, 3 and 4 will close during day shifts (6 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and night shifts (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.) Only one unit will shut down at a time, starting with carousel 4 and moving to carousel 2 as the week progresses.
PDX Next Milestones: As you know, last week we hit a milestone with the installation of the final Y column for the new main terminal roof. Roof module 11 was also moved into place (top photo). This week another milestone was achieved as module 12 – the last of the large modules in Phase 1 – was transported across the airfield (bottom right and left photos), ready to be slid into place and bolted up. Congratulations to the team who helped us get to this point in the process!

Multnomah County Health Officer Asks People to Wear Mask Indoors to Help Overwhelmed Hospitals
Multnomah County Health Officer Dr. Jennifer Vines is asking everyone to start wearing face masks indoors when they're around other people – at least through the end of the year – to help keep a rise in respiratory infections in check. Dr. Vines stressed that it's not a mandate, but will help give overwhelmed pediatric care units and emergency rooms a chance to catch up as they deal with the triple threat of RSV, rapidly rising flu cases and a spike in COVID-19 hospitalizations. Beyond our local area, the Centers for Disease Control Prevention is also making the same recommendation.
DHS Announces REAL ID Enforcement Extension
The Department of Homeland Security recently announced its intent to extend the REAL ID full enforcement date by 24 months, from May 3, 2023, to May 7, 2025. Under the new regulations, states now have additional time to ensure residents have driver’s licenses and identification cards that meet the security standards established by the REAL ID Act. As required by the law, following the enforcement deadline, federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration, will be prohibited from accepting driver’s licenses and identification cards that do not meet these federal standards.
