Velshonna Luckey is a native of Detroit, Michigan. She moved to South Bend and
started working for the University of Notre Dame in 2002 and has been dedicated to
building community connections from the start. While serving as Director of Youth
Programming at the Robinson Community Learning Center, Ms. Luckey sought
partnerships that enabled the creation and sustainable implementation of multiple
programs, like the Bio Genetics Club, Lego Robotics Club and the Robinson
Shakespeare Company, that offered youth unparalleled professional development
opportunities. In partnership with NSBH, she and Nancy Michael, Ph.D., received the
Rodney F. Ganey, Ph.D. Collaborative Community-Based Research Seed Grant in 2016 to develop brain health educational materials for K through 8th graders. Throughout her time, Velshonna has worked with many undergraduate and graduate students helping them connect their academic work to the betterment of communities. In 2020 she helped develop the NEAR Science Workshop, a 1 credit hour CBL course, which offers student direct experience with science translation in connection with community presentations. (NEAR stands for neuroscience, epigenetics, Adverse Childhood Experiences, and resilience.)
In 2022, she became part of the leadership team of Self-Healing Communities of
Greater Michiana (SHCGM), a capacity building movement with the mission of nurturing personal and community well-being through the neuroscience of human resilience and the celebration of our collective strengths. The SHCGM goal is to teach everyone in our community to take care of themselves and each other in a way that prioritizes caring for the nervous system. The vision of SHCGM works towards developing individual and collective capacity such that everyone in the community will have at least 1-2 trusted and caring adults to lean on for practical support, no matter one’s age. Spring 2023 she joined the College of Science as an adjunct assistant teaching professor to teach the NEAR Science Workshop.
Velshonna finds great joy in helping people of all ages understand the relationship
between brain-care and self-care. She also writes a monthly column in the South Bend
Tribune, sharing encouraging tips on how to care for ourselves, so that we can better
care for others.
