INTRODUCTION
& DISCOVERY

One of my goals for having the IMPACT NEWS newsletter is to allow you to discover information about the YMCA, to keep you informed about the philanthropic gestures made to the YMCA of Greater Springfield by the community for the community, and hear about the impact the Y has made in someone’s life and how you can make an impact as well.

DISCOVERY
The mission of the YMCA of Greater Springfield is to serve the human needs in greater Springfield by providing programs that promote lifelong personal growth and the balanced development of spirit, mind and body for all. The YMCA places a focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: Nurturing the potential of every child and teen. The YMCA believes all children deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. At the YMCA, youth are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.

HEALTHY LIVING: Improving the health and well-being of the community. The YMCA is a leading voice on health and well-being. The YMCA of Greater Springfield brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports and shared interests. Thousands of youth, teens, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Giving back and providing support to our neighbors.  At the YMCA, our doors are open for all.
IMPACT
“Coming to the YMCA has kept my spirits up during this very uncertain time. Connecting with others has been great even at a distance. The AOA classes are very well rounded giving me the ability to progress at my own speed…and the movement & music are fun. If I didn’t come to my classes, I would make excuses to not get out & exercise. It keeps me grounded and on target with my goals to improve.”

DID YOU KNOW?
The YMCA of Greater Springfield runs several Active Older Adult (A.O.A.) health & wellness classes throughout the year at the Downtown Springfield and Scantic Valley YMCAs from Low Impact Aerobics to Pickle Ball and Warm Water Pool to Zumba Gold®. Although designed with A.O.A.s in mind, the classes welcome all. It is at the YMCA where A.O.A.s not only focus on their Health & Wellness, but also create their own social network. We would like to thank our friends at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Massachusetts for empowering A.O.A. classes at the Downtown Springfield YMCA for three years.

BECOME A GEM
We have some GEMs at the Y and we hope you will consider becoming one as well.  What is a GEM?  This is an individual who decides they want to perpetually support our Annual Campaign by Giving Every Month. Some people would like to donate to the Y….I say donate because we are a charitable organization….but feel they can’t because they think their amount is too small or it would be too much to give all at one time. Nothing is too small. And to help with the larger gifts, we have set up a way for you to make smaller monthly gifts until you tell us otherwise. Our membership staff can set this up for you so let us know if you would like to become a GEM.
Who, Where,
What, When & Why the Y
Who: Jeffrey E. Poindexter
Where: Bulkley, Richardson and Gelinas, LLP, Partner
What: Board of Directors, Chair & Member YMCA of Greater Springfield
When: Jeff has been a member at the YMCA of Greater Springfield for the past 15 years at the Scantic Valley branch.  During that time he joined the Board of Directors where he has held the position of Chairperson and is in second year of his second two-year term.
Why the Y: "It has been a pleasure working with such a wonderful and competent team in my two terms as Chair.  The first term was spent working with the team to bring the YMCA back to financial strength and the second working and successfully transitioning into a new era with a brand new facility, including a new fitness center and day care facilities.  It is great to see our more urban demographic have access to state-of-the-art facilities, unbelievable staff and an overall great operation.  Although COVID-19 has slowed our progress a bit, we will not stop us from carrying out the mission of the YMCA.  I look forward to continuing to be a part of this organization for a long time to come."
