Grad Night In: Virtual Social Study Hall

Thursday, April 23, 4:00-8:00pm, Online; Registration closes April 23 at noon
Are you looking for a way to maintain progress toward your academic deadlines as days and weeks slide together? Do you find yourself wishing for a way to connect with your Mason graduate student community amid this time of social distancing? If so, join Graduate Student Life and fellow graduate and professional students for our first-ever virtual Grad Night In! Think of this as a virtual social study hall where you can  work on your assignments among a community of grad students contributing to an atmosphere of mutual support.
We will hold our virtual Grad Night In via Slack; Graduate Student Life staff will be available online for the duration of the event to answer questions and provide support. We'll also post occasional memes!

Join our 14-Day Writing Challenge!

Sunday, April 26 - Saturday, May 9, Online; Registration closes April 23 at 5:00pm
Would you like to make headway on your end-of-semester papers and assignments? Are you trying to make progress on your thesis or dissertation or other writing project? If so, plan now to participate in Graduate Student Life’s first-ever 14-Day Writing Challenge!  
Beginning April 26 and ending May 9, you would commit to writing 30 minutes each day. You will also be asked to check in daily to a Slack workspace designated for this challenge to provide ongoing support, accountability, and community. Please contact gradlife@gmu.edu if you have any questions.

Mark Your Calendars: Vote in GAPSA Elections April 27-29!

The Graduate and Professional Student Association (GAPSA) invites all currently enrolled students in Mason's graduate and professional degree programs to vote in elections for GAPSA Executive Officers for 2020-2021! Beginning on Monday, April 27 at midnight through Wednesday, April 29 at 11:59pm, you may vote on Mason 360. Make your voice heard by voting for the candidates you believe will best represent you and your fellow graduate and professional students! Virtual Writing Communities: How Can We Work Together, while We Stay Apart?

In light of all that is going on, I thought it is not only timely, but also prudent, to revisit the discussion around graduate communities I have had in the past (see Study Groups: The Thing to Do in Graduate School and My Cohort, My Tribe) and talk instead about the importance of finding or forming your own virtual writing community. 
Over the past two years, through my fields (my program’s version of comprehensive exams) and my dissertation proposal, I have had an amazing group of friends with me, writing and working on our individual assignments and projects together. I don’t know about y’all, but I miss them and the space we had and created more than a lot of the other aspects of my life that has been put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic and shelter-in-place policy.
