Dear Cathedral Family,
"Don't wait until the fourth Thursday in November,
To sit with family and friends to give thanks.
Make every day a day of Thanksgiving!"
-Charmaine J Forde
Said another way, "There is never the wrong time to do the right thing." With the month of November here, we take time to do a few things unique to this month: we honor the Saints who have built our faith over the centuries, starting with the Apostles and the early church martyrs, all the way up to modern-day saints on November 1, All Saints Day. We remember our dearly departed on November 2, All Souls Day. I have heard these three days, including All Hallows Eve/Halloween, referred to as "the Fall Triduum." Focusing on our faith is another November tradition as we prepare for December's Advent season. November allows us to honor our Veterans on November 11, which is always the right thing to do. And, of course, on the fourth Thursday, we take the time to officially honor the original intent of President Abraham Lincoln by giving thanks to God for all of our blessings. Thanksgiving is a beautiful holiday, but I believe we should always be grateful. We are never guaranteed another day, so why not start with a day of gratitude today?
November is also when we, the Cathedral Leadership Team, review the responses we received from our October constituent surveys. It is imperative that we consistently and sincerely listen to our parents, students, and educators to keep us informed as we strive to cultivate our culture of continuous improvement. Thank you very much to those who shared their thoughts via our October survey.
One very interesting aspect of our Vision statement (to be the Catholic school of the future) is our use of technology. We certainly recognize the importance of technology in education. We also recognize when too much technology gets in the way. With that in mind, we removed cell phones from our classrooms this year. I invite you to view this CBS News Feature about one school's No Phone Policy.
We know that the Catholic Church teaches that parents are the first and primary educators of children. We also know that we are partners and that you chose Cathedral to do the right thing regarding our students' education. The No Cell Phone Policy is one crucial step to managing technology to help our students truly and authentically grow with eyes up and on our educators. Recent studies show quite clearly that teenage depression and anxiety, as well as low test scores, particularly in math, are tied to the advent of cell phones in 2010. Based on the feedback we have received thus far, our new policy has been very positive in our classrooms.
In closing, I would like to thank you for your partnership with us. We take very seriously our Mission in providing our students with the very best Catholic, Holy Cross education each and every day. As Blessed Basil Moreau, the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, stated: "How we educate the mind will change with the times; how we cultivate the heart is and will remain timeless."
May we all be grateful this month and always!

Holy Cross Pilgrimages
Two groups of Cathedral educators were blessed to participate in Holy Cross pilgrimages recently. Five educators (Joellen Desautels, Kim Carver, Kathy Pivonka, Jonathan Kane, and Jennifer Hollis) traveled to Rome and stayed at the Holy Cross house with our wonderful former Chaplain, Father Emmanuel. The group attended daily mass and prayer in the chapel. The highlight was the Papal Audience and getting very close to Pope Francis. Father Emmanuel was a wonderful, gracious host, and we are incredibly grateful for his hospitality.
Six of our educators (Katie Lewis, Mark Matthews, Maribeth Cloud, Kathy Darnell, Jennifer Shevlin, and Anthony Ernst) traveled to France, where they visited the birthplace of Holy Cross. Among the highlights of their trip was praying at the tomb of Blessed Basil Moreau, the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross. We have no doubt these pilgrimages deepened our educators' spiritual and professional development.
