I would like to wish everyone a meaningful and restful holiday season. This semester has been filled with energy, milestones, and achievements that remind us of the community we all share. Our First Symposium was a resounding success, with 277 students showcasing their research, creativity, and passions. Homecoming brought over 1200 alumni and friends to campus, where they reconnected with one another, celebrated the University’s enduring legacy, and enjoyed our first official ghost tour.
On campus, we’ve made great progress on several capital projects. The Mood-Bridwell renovation is going smoothly and set to be completed for move-in this summer. The new Welcome Center and residence halls for first- and second-year students are also beginning to take shape. Our fall athletes have had a season to remember, not just for their success on the field, but also for the incredible support they’ve received—some of the best crowds in our history! Our first-year students are nearing the end of their first semester and they have navigated the challenges of living independently, making new friends, getting involved in campus life, and thriving in their classes.
This is the time of year when we are reminded to pause and give thanks. I appreciate the contributions each member of Southwestern has made to our shared success.
This season also brings exciting opportunities to connect, explore, and celebrate. Among these are the Explore Austin trips, which offer wonderful ways to unwind and build camaraderie. Spend time with the Black Student Union at the newly renovated Playland Skate Center or join classmates for the Austin Pow Wow. Details about all upcoming trips can be found online, and I encourage you to take part in these off-campus experiences.
The end of the semester also marks the opportunity for our students to showcase their achievements. Student recitals, art exhibits, and capstone presentations across various disciplines are wonderful traditions that highlight the extraordinary effort, creativity, and scholarship of our community.
Candlelight, a beloved 109-year Southwestern tradition, is one of the fall semester’s most anticipated events. This special service of lessons and carols in Lois Perkins Chapel brings our community together to reflect, celebrate, and enjoy the spirit of the season. This year, two services will be held on December 5, at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.
Speaking of traditions, a campus favorite—Late Night Breakfast—is just around the corner! Join us on December 10 at 9:30 p.m. for a much-needed study break filled with comfort breakfast food and the best karaoke around. I, along with members of the faculty and staff, will be on hand flipping pancakes and serving dessert.
The holiday season also offers opportunities to give back. Our campus Holiday Food Drive is in full swing. Please bring non-perishable food items to the designated boxes around campus now through Thursday, December 5. This effort is co-sponsored by the Student Government Association, Omicron Delta Kappa, Interfraternity Council, Intersorority Council, Residence Life, and Alpha Phi Omega.
Reflecting on the spirit of giving, it is also a moment to celebrate the remarkable impact of Thrive: The Campaign for Southwestern. This campaign has transformed our campus and enriched the student experience in profound ways. We are poised to meet our $150 million goal this academic year and will celebrate this extraordinary achievement together next fall. Watch this video to join us in recognizing the generosity that has fueled this transformation.
As we embrace this season of gratitude and reflection, let us also look ahead with hope and excitement for all that lies before us. I am deeply thankful for each of you and the roles you play in making our community vibrant and strong.
Warm regards,
