City of Austin – UT Austin Call for Research Proposals:
Submit Your Research Proposal by June 23, 2023
The City of Austin’s Office of Innovation is partnering with UT Austin to hold the inaugural CoA - UT Call for Research Proposals that address City-identified research needs. The City is hoping to fund multiple projects with budgets ranging from $20,000 to $60,000 through the City of Austin-UT Austin Interlocal Agreement. Contracts must be formalized by Aug. 15, 2023, and research must start by Jan. 31, 2024.

- Community Communications: Breaking through the Noise (Austin Energy)
- Culture and Community Resilience: Intersections and Innovations (Economic Development Department)
- Misinformation and Public Health Messaging Experienced by Social Media Users in Central Texas during the Mpox Outbreak (Austin Public Health, Immunization Program)
- The Treatment of Cumulative Trauma as an Occupational Hazard for Police Officers (Austin Police Department)
- Using AI to Promote Equity and Improve Emergency Preparedness in Underserved Communities during Climate Change-Induced Weather Events (Communications and Public Information Office)
Learn more and submit a three-page maximum project summary via the online submission portal no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, June 23, 2023. Researchers are asked to address and include the following section headings:
- Description – Provide a description of how the project will be carried out. Briefly describe geographical and temporal parameters of study, methodology, types and size of evidence to be analyzed, study design, expected outcomes, and anticipated timeline.
- Feasibility – Please explain why and how your proposed research project will likely be executed successfully with the anticipated timeframe and other resources available, including any technical, financial, legal, environmental, etc. considerations.
- Team Expertise – Describe your team's expertise, capabilities, any relevant technical skills and current knowledge available.
- Anticipated Data Production and/or Deliverables – Provide a description of anticipated data and information (or other deliverables) to be produced in this project, and how these data will be shared and utilized. Describe any expected restrictions on data sharing and distribution.
- Stakeholder and Team Engagement – Please describe how you plan to engage with stakeholders and partners to ensure that your research is responsive to their needs and interests.
- Risk/Harm Mitigation – Please list any potential risks or harm this project may unintentionally have on the community, environment, or other entities. Include how the team plans to mitigate those potential impacts.
- Requested Budget – Please include only the total funding requested, including indirect costs at 15%; up to $60,000.
Follow-up meetings may be scheduled with the UT research teams (and the City of Austin counterpart) selected as finalists to clarify any questions.
