Tammy Duckworth is Pregnant, John Leguizamo Weighs Public Office, and Uber Names Chief Diversity Officer

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has withdrawn an offer to fully fund Trump’s proposed $25 billion border wall -- you know, the one Mexico was supposed to pay for. The president retorted, “if there is no Wall, there is no DACA.” The next funding deadline is February 8th, and POTUS45 has set March 5th as the date the DACA program ends. Sidestepping Senate leaders of both parties, a bipartisan group has taken it upon themselves to quickly resolve the immigration dispute. In the meantime, 800,000 lives hang in the balance. Special Counsel Robert Mueller now appears to be focusing on whether Donald Trump obstructed the investigation into Russian election meddling.  Put down the Diet Cokes. It might be Mueller time. AG Jeff Sessions was the first member of Trump’s Cabinet to be interviewed. And WaPo reports that in an introductory Oval Office meeting, Trump asked then-Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe who he voted for in the 2016 election. Meanwhile, congressional Republicans have intensified their own investigations of the DOJ’s and FBI's handling of inquiries into Trump’s ties to Russia. No time like the present to get out of town. The president heads to Davos this evening sans the First Lady. In a sudden change of plans, and amidst headlines the president paid a porn star hush money following an alleged affair, Melania is staying behind, citing scheduling and logistic issues. Speaking of First Ladies, Michelle Obama was spotted last night at hot DC dining spot Maydan with former WH Chef/Nutrition Policy Advisor Sam Kass. The two shared dinner in the second-story dining room. Lastly, remember when school shootings were major breaking news? Not anymore. In the latest of at least 11 school shootings since January 1st, two students were killed and 18 were injured on Tuesday in Kentucky. Not a single tweet from 45 referenced the fatalities. I wonder if it would have caught the president’s attention had the shooter been an immigrant and not a 14-year-old white kid. We’re halfway through the week and we’re kicking it off with this...

Tammy Duckworth Is Six Months Preggers
Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL)
announced Tuesday that she is pregnant with her second child, due later this year. She will become the first Senator to give birth while in office, though not the first member of Congress. Ten female members of the House of Representatives have had children while serving in the lower chamber. “Bryan and I are thrilled that our family is getting a little bit bigger, and Abigail is ecstatic to welcome her baby sister home this spring," Duckworth said in a statement, referring to her husband and 3-year-old daughter. An Iraq war veteran who became a double amputee after the helicopter she was co-piloting was shot down in Iraq in 2004, Duckworth says her experiences as a working mother have given her a particular perspective serving in Congress, where she has championed issues affecting working families. Her baby girl is due in April, just a few months after she turns 50. Congrats, Senator! More here.
Lawson Will Not Leave SOTU Even if CBC Exits
There has not yet been a determined course of action for the Congressional Black Caucus around this month’s State of the Union. CBC Chair Congressman Cedric Richmond (D-LA) has mentioned a few options including boycotting the January 30th event. However, Congressman Al Lawson (D-FL) says he plans on attending regardless. “Congressman Lawson will be in attendance for the entire State of the Union,” asserted Stephanie Lambert, Lawson’s newly appointed Comms Director, on Tuesday. Lawson’s primary opponent, former CBC staffer Rontel Batie, pounced on the opportunity to try and paint Lawson as a disloyal member of the Caucus in a campaign email. “Florida's 5th district deserves a fighter who will be unapologetic in their advocacy for the people who need it the most, and that's why I believe that I'll join the ranks of other underdogs who won elections that conventional political wisdom couldn't see coming,” the email read. We reached out to Lambert for clarity around the Congressman’s decision. However, we did not hear back. So far Members Maxine Waters (D-CA), Frederica Wilson (D-FL), John Lewis (D-GA), and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) are planning to skip the SOTU entirely. More here.
Members Ask Acosta For Public Hearing on Tips Rule
Labor Secretary Alex Acosta
, the sole Latino member of Trump’s Cabinet, has angered worker rights’ groups by taking steps to rescind a 2011 rule that declared tips are the property of employees. This drew the particular ire of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, a worker center whose President, Saru Jayaraman, drew a direct line from what she calls the “tip theft” policy to Acosta’s aspirations, with rumors swirling that he is biding his time for a spot on the federal bench. Congressmen Bobby Scott (D-VA), Keith Ellison (D-MN), and Mark Takano (D-CA), along with Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), sent Acosta a letter requesting the department hold public hearings on this proposed rule. “The Department’s proposed rule rescinds parts of its current regulations that clarify tips are the property of employees, regardless of whether the employer takes a tip credit or pays the employee the full federal minimum wage,” the members wrote. “We urge the Department to hold public hearings, both at its Washington, D.C. headquarters and throughout the country, to respond to this strong public awareness and interest in providing input on the proposed rule’s impact.” They go on to say that providing workers with an opportunity to speak first hand in a public hearing on the impact of the proposed rule would provide an opportunity for the Labor Department to hear from economists on the rule’s costs to workers. According to an analysis by the Economic Policy Institute, the rule could have the effect of allowing employers to pocket $5.8 billion of their employees' tips each year. Read the full letter here.
Top Dems Question Kushner Security Clearance -- Again
Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), and Oversight & Government Reform Committee Ranking Member Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) have unanswered questions regarding Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and his year-long attempt to procure top secret clearance. The three members sent a letter to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly to demand answers on how the White House handles the security clearance process for its staff, in light of reports revealing details of Kushner’s one-year-old interim clearance. “In an effort to bring more transparency and conduct effective oversight, Congress must have access to information about staff serving in our Nation’s highest office. While we understand you cannot speak to ongoing investigations, it is important for us to understand the reason for [Jared] Kushner’s delayed security clearance, how many other White House staff are similarly situated, and determine what risks these delays may pose to our nation’s security,” the letter reads. Uber Brings On Its First Chief Diversity Officer
Bo Young Lee
has been named as the first-ever Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for Uber. The creation of the new position follows recommendations by former AG Eric Holder that Uber create a senior executive position to handle diversity, after Holder’s investigation into Uber's workplace culture. The University of Michigan grad, who earned her MBA from NYU, was previously the Global Diversity and Inclusion Officer at financial services firm Marsh. Prior to Marsh, Lee was the Global Practice Leader for Diversity Best Practices Consulting, she launched Aon Hewitt’s Global Emerging Workforce Solutions consulting practice and held diversity leadership roles at Ernst & Young and National Grid. "As I was interviewing for this role, it became very clear that Uber is taking their cultural transformation seriously and truly wants to create a culture where every single person feels proud and heard," Lee said. "There's much more work to be done, and I'm excited to bring my experience to the table." Bernard C. Coleman III, who was serving as Global Head of Diversity, will report to Lee. Congrats! More here.
Michelle Obama Books Third Speaking Gig in Canada
Canadians cannot get enough of Michelle Obama. The former First Lady is heading to Calgary, a cosmopolitan city in the Western province of Alberta. The event billed as An Evening with Michelle Obama will take place March 23rd. It will be in conversation format -- with a moderator -- for an hour to an hour and a half. This will mark Obama’s first appearance in Alberta. Organizers say they expect tickets for the evening to go quickly, with audiences eager to hear from the prominent public figure. Organizers of the event have previously brought Oprah Winfrey and Hillary Clinton to Calgary. Michelle Obama spoke in Toronto in November, and she’s slated to speak in Vancouver in February -- an event so popular they had to add a second day. Tickets for the Calgary event start at $199. John Leguizamo Ponders Public Office
Could John Leguizamo be heading to public office? He’s certainly willing. The actor and vocal anti-Trump activist revealed to The Daily Beast he is so angry at the racism he sees leveled at Latinos and African Americans in Texas, that he would gladly pursue public service even if it meant giving up acting. “Yes, I would run if my celebrity could get me elected, to get rid of gerrymandering and to allow people to teach Latino history in Texas which is 39% Latino and around 12% Black, so we people of color are the majority. Why are we so beaten down there?” the actor said. In November, the Texas State Board of Education voted not to adopt a textbook covering Mexican American Studies, leading to criticism of the way Texas teaches Mexican American Studies to students. Leguizamo responded that he is shocked there is still such ignorance, as “the second-oldest ethnic group in America after Native Americans, and we are the most decorated minority. How is that not in all the textbooks? How America not learns this makes us so vulnerable to comments and policies from this president, Jeff Sessions, and Greg Abbott.” Texas political operatives? Please give John a call. Talk amongst yourselves Let us know what you decide. More here.
London Breed Replaced as First Black Female Interim Mayor of San Francisco
There was a political uproar in the Bay as San Francisco Acting Mayor London Breed was removed from the job by her colleagues at the Board of Supervisors in a Tuesday vote that surprised many in the city. Supervisor Mark Farrell will replace her as interim mayor until voters select a new mayor in June. The board’s vote marked a surprising reversal of fortune for Breed and shifts the city’s political landscape. As soon as it became apparent that the first Black woman to lead San Francisco was being replaced by a white male representing some of the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods, the board chambers erupted. It outraged many residents who showed up to support Breed, who became acting mayor after the sudden death of Mayor Ed Lee six weeks ago. Breed, who remains Board of Supervisors President, expressed resignation at the outcome. “I will continue to do all that I can to take care of this city,” she said. “I am still on the ballot June 5th, and we need to get fired up and ready to go!” More here.
Looking for All the Black Women Running for Office? Found It!
Luvvie Ajayi, the NYT best-selling author of We’re Judging You, recently discovered there was no database of Black women running for office in 2018. So, with the help of three other women -- Sili Recio, Lucrecer Braxton, and Candace Jones -- Ajayi put together the database. The team created spreadsheets and Google Docs and eventually came up with a list of more than 100 Black women running for office. Ajayi is careful to point out that the database is not an endorsement of any particular candidate. Users should treat it as a “phone book” of candidates and information on their positions, she says. It includes 392 Black women running for office and can be searched by both state and candidate name. The site also allows users to fill out a form if they want to be added to the list or know someone who does. Check it out here.
GOP Candidate Running Unopposed in Colorado
Republican Peter Yu has officially declared his candidacy for Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District. The seat is currently held by Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO), who is running for governor. Yu grew up in Loveland, where his family owned and operated a Chinese restaurant for nearly 20 years. The Fort Lewis College graduate now has a career in business. As a Republican, Yu acknowledges that voters in the district, which includes the greater Boulder/Broomfield area as well as Fort Collins, Loveland, and Wellington, typically vote Democrat. But, he is hoping to gain traction in the district over finding common ground between the parties. "Don't simply vote for someone because there's a D next to a name or an R next to a name ... We all want us to be able to be healthy, we all want us to be able to have good jobs, to have prosperity. There's just two different philosophies on how to do that," Yu said. He goes on to say, “We've had an African American ascend to the most powerful position in the world, and that's the beauty of this country, and I think if we keep going down this path of dividing, and people saying, oh, well, black lives matter, or Hispanics are being discriminated against in this country, or Asians, we don't want them here anymore — those are steps back.” He is currently running unopposed in the primary election, with no other declared Republican candidates. Three Democratic candidates -- Kristopher Larsen, Joe Neguse, and Mark Williams -- are currently in the race. Primary elections will take place June 26th, and the general election will be held November 6th. More here.

Obama Appointee Days Away From Closing Deal to Buy Weinstein Co.
María Contreras-Sweet, Barack Obama
’s former Small Business Administration Chief, is leading an investment group to buy The Weinstein Company, and the deal could now finally be days away. Weinstein's owners have agreed to a two-week exclusivity period through the end of next week with Contreras-Sweet’s team. Her offer is a little less than $300 million in cash plus the assumption of $225 million of debt. In addition, she has agreed to fund the company with $175 million of cash and seek a line of credit. The would-be buyers also intend to set aside an undisclosed amount of money in a payment fund for victims of alleged sexual harassment and assault by former co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein. The new company, under a new banner and with a board led by women, will inherit a strong lineup of library titles and output deals with the likes of Netflix. Projects include the Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes musical In The Heights, the Armie Hammer-Dev Patel starrer Hotel Mumbai, as well as numerous other series and films. More here.
Armstrong Williams Poised to Buy Five Stations from Sinclair
Conservative commentator Armstrong Williams, an entrepreneur whose companies hold the licenses for seven television stations, says that he intends to buy five local TV stations from Sinclair Broadcast Group if the Justice Department requires Sinclair to divest stations in conjunction with Sinclair’s pending $3.9 billion merger with Tribune Media Co. Sinclair, known for its conservative leanings, will likely face demands to sell TV stations in at least ten cities to satisfy regulators who are wrapping up a review of the company’s merger plan. It will give the conglomerate reach into leading media markets, including NYC, LA, and Chicago. 21st Century Fox Inc. is close to an agreement to buy as many as ten TV stations from Sinclair as well. Former Stacey Plaskett Staffers Plead Guilty to Distributing Explicit Images
Two former staffers for Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett (D-USVI) pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges stemming from their circulation of sexually explicit photos and videos of the delegate and her husband. Juan McCullum, 36, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to disclose sexual images and attempted first-degree unlawful publication of a sexual image and Dorene Browne-Louis, 45, pleaded guilty to one federal cyber charge and a DC charge of conspiracy to disclose sexual images. The court is now considering a plea by McCullum to suspend all but 366 days if he completes two years of supervised probation and 100 hours of community service. McCullum came into possession of the private images of Plaskett after offering to take the delegate's malfunctioning, password-protected iPhone -- which contained private, nude images -- to an Apple store in March 2016 to get it repaired. In July 2016, after leaving Plaskett's office, he created a Hotmail account and Facebook social media account, using a false name, to distribute and post the images and videos and encouraged others to redistribute the content in the delegate's district. Browne-Louis provided him with email addresses and other contact information to distribute the images. All federal charges in the case carry a maximum one-year prison sentence, while the DC offenses each carry up to 180 days in jail. More here.
Corrine Brown Must Report to Jail by Monday
Former Florida Congresswoman Corrine Brown lost her bid to stay out of jail while she appeals her conviction on fraud charges. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta on Monday rejected her request to delay the start of her jail time by another month, after federal Judge Timothy Corrigan directed the request there. Brown is expected to report to jail no later than noon on January 29th. “This court has already fully considered the issue,” Corrigan wrote, adding later, “Ms. Brown is asking the wrong court. She should direct her request to the Eleventh Circuit.” The 71-year-old Democrat was sentenced to five years in prison for fraud, as well as for lying on her tax returns and congressional financial disclosure forms about income from a purported charity for poor students that she used as a personal slush fund. Brown is appealing, saying it was wrong for the trial judge to dismiss a juror who claimed the "Holy Spirit" told him she's innocent. More here.

SCOTUS Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor is heading to Texas, where she will give a talk at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) tomorrow. During her appearance, Justice Sotomayor will engage with UTSA students to answer questions regarding her personal journey -- rising through the ranks of the judiciary system to the nation’s highest court. As we reported earlier this month, Justice Sotomayor will be at the University of Houston Law Center on Friday, where she is scheduled to answer questions from current law school students as well as those in pre-law programs -- in a session moderated by UH Law Center Dean Leonard M. Baynes. More info on her UTSA appearance here.

Philip Randolph and the Pullman Porters, is located in the Pullman National Monument on Chicago's South Side and was designated a national park site by then-President Obama on February 19, 2015. This year, the museum will be celebrating its 23rd anniversary. More here.
