Here’s a puzzle for you: How do you make 80-foot wood beams that appear to rise and swoop in graceful curves? That puzzle preoccupied architects, engineers, contractors, and craftspeople for years as they prepared to build the main terminal’s new roof — which, when it is completed, will weigh 18 million pounds.
Since Superman wasn’t available to spend a few months bending trees, the team found the answer through a mix of trials, technology, and teamwork. As a bonus, watch local filmmaker Alberta Poon’s short ode to the roof in progress. (Two bucks says you’ll find yourself whistling along.)
